My Pokemon-esque roguelike has some fancy new screen transitions! I still haven't decided on a name but I'm tentatively referring to it as "Critterlocke."

The only thing that would replace my Steam Deck LCD is a Steam Deck “2.0” with OLED, better battery, and mildly better performance on larger games. Until then, I’m using the OG every day, I love it so much.
We're so used to products depreciating in terms of value, performance, quality, etc. all the time. three and a half years in and my steam deck is doing just fine, thanks. Maybe soon it could use a battery replacement but such is the fate of all things using lithium ion batteries.

it’s crazy to me that people even fight you on this, it’s very clearly the intent in the designs

and even if someone doesn’t believe it, why would they remove all whimsy from their life to argue otherwise?

Depending on the mechanical complexity, some games in UFO 50 might be perfect for this. Very easy to turn brain off and play, unless you need something less with less active engagement

jumping into a giant pit in Tears of the Kingdom, day one. sure it was theorized, but I somehow avoided those theories. I was amazed at the scale of that game, and how Nintendo somehow kept that out of marketing.
tell me about a time you were awed by a set piece in a video game. not a story beat, not an emotional moment or a cool mechanic, but something just There, in the world, that made your jaw drop or sent a chill up your spine

While not nearly the most important thing going on, I wrote some jokes about why this year AI in video games is going to be the absolute most annoying debate. Even more annoying than it already is. Just deeply annoying.
2026 Is Going To Be The Year AI in Gaming Gets Super Annoying
Gaming needs to be clear about how, and why, it's using AI

update, I’m stupid and just needed to use the ResourceSaver
This week’s fresh game dev hell involves creating a save system. I thought it’d be easy - serialize some booleans and objects, write to a file, read them later.

Nested objects throw a wrench in it all, bloating my save time or making things too complex. I may need to write 20 custom serializers.

My tactic for a while was to do just 30 minutes max of my side hustle, every day. Doing a little a day kept a “streak,” and I didn’t want to break that streak, which pushed me to keep it.
I’d work on it directly after I clocked out, to make sure I had some momentum.

I totally understand people wanting to wait until beastieball is “1.0” to play it. I also don’t usually play early access titles.

My main worry at this point is that the game is already so complete and universally beloved, by the time we call it 1.0 i might accidentally make it worse somehow…

I always thought Cave Story had an interesting take. Guns level up with experience, but you lose experience with a gun if you get hit. It’s a fluid reward for doing well, a punishment for mistakes, and an incentive to get better

What exactly confuses you about it? I can try to help. You just mean writing custom set and get functions for your variables, right?
