Wales generally has a left of centre political identity.
This is how Caerphilly voted.
Reform may win a lot of seats in Wales, but it will be so hard for them to ever form a Government as most ppl don't agree with them.
This is why proportional systems are so much better.

Well, that's the lesson for Labour in tonight's Caerphilly by-election: keep obsessing about losing votes on the right, placating Reform voters...and lose votes on to the left. Here, Plaid Cymru benefitted.

One of the things I love about In Our Time is that I can both listen to it properly, and also use it as sleep ASMR.
We are awarding our President's Medal to 'In Our Time' as it has done so much to showcase humanities & social sciences. We'd decided this before the news of Melvyn Bragg stepping down, but glad we got our timing right & had a chance to celebrate with him!

This just isn’t true. Not only is refusing to teach a significant disruption, it also has a financial cost. When @newcastleucu.bsky.social took action this year, the university paid out £2.4m in compensation to students.
A problem UCU has to contend with is that academics have no leverage over management in UK HE.
Refusing to teach or mark is no problem for senior management, as they can bypass academic roles.
In fact, they are itching to sell degrees without any substantive academic involvement.

This is really thoughtful and thought-provoking - so happy to have voted for Matt for this casual vacancy on UCU NEC/HEC. If you're a member of UCU + not yet voted, dig out those papers + vote @matthewbarnard.phd for UK-wide (and Adam Hansen for NE region) 🥰
I've written a post on my thoughts on why it's proving so hard to get a positive intervention in HE by the government, and what we might be able to do about it: blog.matthewbarnard.phd/this-governm... #ucu
This Government, This Crisis.
Higher Education funding is in crisis and the present Labour government is not making comforting noises. Until recently, the Government has been mostly silent on Higher Education, even their manifesto...

100% this. Saw there was a blue Labour MP saying he "didn't care" if universities went bankrupt so long as immigration went down. He might want to look at some of the basic demographics of Labour support (and also look at who the largest employers are in large Labour seats).
The Glasmanisation of the Labour Party is a massive risk to them. The Conservatives discovered that if you insult your professional base long enough in a desperate attempt to win populist right votes, they will flock to the Lib Dems and you lose 60 seats. Labour may find similar soon enough.
I had many problems with Blair, but his talk of a modern, open, knowledge-based economy was a breath of fresh air compared to this atavistic, closed-minded economically illiterate shit.
