That doesn’t mean Twitter serves the same role now - it clearly doesn’t, although it’s frying a lot of brains with some pretty shocking effects in the real world. But places like TikTok can’t play the same role because elites don’t use them and there’s no true discourse.

Gotta say I really strenuously disagree with this. People have been making versions of this argument for years but, for instance, Musk seizing Twitter had a noticeable effect on politics. That’s because the opinion and consensus of elites matters, A LOT, so their forums also matter a lot.
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.
