For starters, the Embassy letter asserts as fact that Mohammed “threw rocks at vehicles belonging to Israeli citizens.” As proof, it cites his “confession” on the night of his arrest—leaving out that, in a sworn affidavit, Mohammed wrote: “The interrogator threatened that if I did not comply, he would instruct the soldiers to beat me. Out of sheer fear, I ultimately confessed.”

The letter also omits that the interrogation took place after soldiers stormed his home at 3 a.m., blindfolded him, tied his hands behind his back, and—according to his sworn affidavit—beat him with rifle butts in a military vehicle, continuing the assault at Ofer Prison. He had no lawyer or guardian present during questioning.

I 100% agree that NYC isn't a replicative environment to be transposed onto the national stage but I do seriously hope that in the coming weeks and months people actually grapple with how a Muslim nominee was besieged by people in his own party and out on the basis of being Muslim and nothing else.
