Stay out super late tonight
Picking apples, making pies
Put a little something in our lemonade
And take it with us

We're half awake in a fake empire

Got out on the trail this morning to enjoy the fog and the fungi.

I just got home from over two weeks away and I didn’t know my dogs could be so smiley and affectionate.

In 24 hrs, I will be reunited with my dogs. And I am very much looking forward to seeing those goofy pups for the first time in over two weeks.

Today I learned that Dublin Airport won’t let you check in more than three hours before your flight even though the check in desk is very open. ☹️

There is something I just love about a train passing by my train platform at full speed.

Did a little day tour and got to see the cliffs of Moher. The weather cleared up just as we arrived.

Unfortunately, between storms in Ireland and US air traffic, I postponed my return to the states. But hey, it means I have time to go to Galway for a couple days.

Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics"

guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation

OMG thank you. Infinite Jest is amazing at describing depression and digging into addiction and recovery.
This is such a hack answer, but reading Infinite Jest really exploded my understanding of and empathy around the issues of depression and addiction! It legitimately made me a better person!
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

I’m in Ireland this week. I got home from a Saturday night pub crawl with the friend I’m staying with. And I have to say, I not only enjoyed the live music but also hours of everyone singing along with the live music.

ironically what makes star wars stuff best is when it is 'something else, but also star wars'

e.g. Andor, a British political thriller but also Star Wars
the Mandalorian, an episode-of-the-week Western but also Star Wars (when it was good)

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Evergreen travel gripe: if you want to listen to stuff…any stuff, use headphones.

Even for kids.

I’m giving out books tonight in addition to candy.

It’s funny. Some kids are like ‘no book’ and some are like ‘oh wow, I got a book!’

Yesterday I spent the afternoon messing around making baskets out of the invasive English ivy I cleaned up.

Very, very rustic baskets, but it was actually pretty fun.

The GIF is perfect.
When a new technology suddenly pivots from being sold as a tool for business and governments, to individual subscription services and “adult” entertainment (porn) it’s a bad sign for anyone who’s invested in said new technology.
