As The Telegraph reported last night:
Sir Keir Starmer has caved to welfare rebels by agreeing that existing disability claimants can keep their benefits.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.

What a perfect day to tell brands that they can't call themselves LGBTQ+ allies and fund GB News.
Send them a clear message: back pride, not hate 👇

The notion we should learn from the United States - where people are getting swept up off the streets and imprisoned by the state for their politically inconvenient speech - might be the most absurd thing the Financial Times has ever published.
If you've never been targeted by a hate mob, and your privilege means you're unlikely ever to be, and you evidently have no curiosity about the lives of those who have, you really, really shouldn't be writing a column about free speech. on.ft.com/4dv5JbD
On free speech, Britain can learn from America

Never take seriously those who ridicule low income people for having a smartphone or laptop.
“If they’re so poor how did they buy an iPhone???”
Because they’re trying to escape poverty, not the 1700s, genius. If you think basic tech access is unnecessary or a luxury, survive a month without it.

Oh boy. The recording of the debate I did with Jonathan Portes against Nadim Zahawi & Matthew Goodwin is up.
It got pretty nasty, but we won by a long way, which is nice.
@jdportes.bsky.social proving Goodwin was lying about OBR figures was a highlight for me 😅

Current proposals on welfare reform will increase levels of poverty among disabled households.
As part of the Disability Charities Consortium, we’ve written to Liz Kendall and Rachel Reeves to ask for a cross-governmental strategy to lift disabled people out of poverty.

Every death on our roads is one too many. Slower speeds not only protect the most vulnerable, but help create safer streets. We’ll continue working to eliminate death & serious injury on the transport network.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars.
Even if those cars are electric.
And then there’s all the parking.
OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money and pollution.

This is how the likes of Matthew Goodwin gets “polling” not worth the name that tells you 80% of us supposedly want immigeation reduced by a factor of ten, or whatever other total nonsense he’s been sharing lately.
You can get polls to say almost anything. All depends on the question.

Took part in an interesting Chatham House rule discussion this morning covering both the legal/policy substance and the public politics of the European Convention on Human Rights. I contributed on why many people have uncertain and cross-pressured views, outside two solid defend/oppose groups

Powerlessness is a tide tonight.
It’s not rage, not even grief. Just a profound silence where action should be.
The house is quiet.
The world is burning.
