This is true for the Midwest as well. Take Iowa as a leading example. We used to be in the top 20% for education, medical care, and a host of other things. We were one of the first to legalize gay marriage. We had strong immigrant communities.
this doesn't mean the South is hopeless, it doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep trying to win elections and fight the MAGAs in the South, but maintaining this fantasy nonsense about how the South doesn't REALLY have a uniquely racist culture in a number of respects is just foolishness
