I’ll take every bit of good news I can get. “Senators from both parties endorsed a $400 million increase to the budget of the National Institutes of Health… in an Appropriations Committee vote that represents a clear rebuke of President Trump’s plan to dramatically reduce the agency’s spending.”

Fantastic work of @evgenykvon.bsky.social team. @gracebower.bsky.social did an amazing job. It was a pleasure to assist them even as little as we did. Hope for more collaborations in the future!!! Congratulations!!!!!
Our paper describing the Range Extender element which is required and sufficient for long-range enhancer activation at the Shh locus is now available at @nature.com. Congrats to @gracebower.bsky.social who led the study. Below is a brief summary of the main findings www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/

Even though cataract surgery is generally safe and effective, cataract is still a leading cause of blindness worldwide. We need to understand the optical and materials properties of the eye lens to make better replacement lenses. This budget would eliminate that, including my lab's work.
The White House proposed budget for 2026 does not include the National Eye Institute…

The institute that has funded almost the entirety of my career.

The proposal is to merge it in with neuroscience, despite a whole half of the eye (the front part) which has little to do with neuroscience per se.

Senator Durbin noted that some (I believe Republican Senators) had indicated the US had been doing more than its share of biomedical research and it was time for other countries take a turn.
