Marine microbial ecology, corals shallow to deep sea, snorkeling to submersibles. Happiest when a little salty. Basis for characters in 2 fiction novels. Listens to '80s big hair bands when working in lab.

It is my greatest sorrow to share that my beloved wife Sarah Olson James passed away in her sleep Christmas morning.

Christmas Eve morning she and I watched “White Christmas,” her favorite, and talked about life, our amazing kids, and how happy we were this holiday season.

Happy #WorldJellyfishDay!

I've drawn quite a few jellyfish in my time. Their relatively simple and distinctive shape make them an ideal subject for the beginner artist. As you improve, you can tackle the wider variety of color and form. Here is a fantastical one 🪼

New Nature paper!

Vaga et al. (2025) reconstruct a time-calibrated phylogeny of stony (scleractinian) corals, which suggests that some could be resilient to climate change.

Congrats @claudiavaga.bsky.social

A global coral phylogeny reveals resilience and vulnerability through deep time - Nature
The most recent common ancestor of the stony coral Scleractinia dates to about 460 million years ago and was probably a solitary, heterotrophic and free-living organism.

Our nation's federal employees are more than just numbers on a spreadsheet.

They make sure we have clean water.

They protect us from financial fraud.

They provide healthcare to our communities.

They make our government actually work for people.

Do not forget this.
