I went to a boardgame night this evening at a pretty large brewery in Saint Paul. It's usually pretty quiet on Thursdays but I could barely find parking. When I got there I found out why. The place was packed with folks making protest signs for tomorrow. The atmosphere was infectious and joyful.

Are there board game collectors who collect prototypes of published games?

I know at least 1 famous game designer that doesn't care for his prototypes and I thought it could be good prices for a charity auction.

To new & aspiring designers - the best way to approach a new design is almost always whatever gets it to the table the fastest.

Not sussing out every detail or balancing any of it ahead of time. Actually making & playing the game.

Your regular reminder that you can in fact tackle sensitive and thorny political and societal issues with board games and they can even be fun to play, only thing is you need to actually give it some thought, care and attention

Cole did wonders at Leder, and no doubt he'll work his magic at Buried Giant Studios. Kyle also leaving means BGS will have that consistent style I always loved about Leder's games.

Excited to see what new games they bring into the world! And how Leder Games will define itself post-Wehrle. 👀
I have an important announcement. Kyle and I are going to be leaving Leder Games to start a new venture. It has been an honor to spend the past eight years working with them. We wish them all the best of luck, and cannot wait to show you what we are working on next.

A Letter from Cole Wehrle

I am so unreasonably jelly that this game exists and
A - I did not design it and
B - I do not own a copy

I can't fix A but I can definitely fix B!

Also might need to try reaching out to Arclight again as my last attempt seemed to go nowhere. 😅 If anyone knows a way to reach them I am all ears!

I've heard people say that after a certain point - game designers lose a hobby and gain a hussle.

What did you replace your lost hobby with?

For me? That's pretty easy. It was gunpla 🤖

Well, it was a nice run. I got this geekmail last night.

When I self-published This Is Not a Game About a Pipe, I thought, as many did, that The Treachery of Images was now in the public domain.

2025 was kind of a bullshit year in a broad sense, and a rather productive year on a personal level.

Lots of solid meetings, prototypes sent out & great playtests. My boyfriend & I are unreasonably gay (complimentary).

I am still actively looking for is work - open to leads or DMs! 👀

Got a prototype back from a publisher today. Very much appreciate that they were willing to send it back my way.

What I didn't appreciate was how they treated the game's box. Why would anyone tear into a game box like this? 😕

I love how indie this pitch feels. Primarily because it avoids the all too easy p/review cycle - hopefully in favor of something with more substance.
alright I've got a pitch for you

a small, semi-regular game zine that's a collection of 1-page essays, but not reviews/previews

the writer picks any game they please and produces the essay

that essay is then given to an artist who produces a related/inspired piece for the second page

Q for fellow game designers. Context: You work for an organization whose product is not games and in a role that is not game design and are asked to create a game-like activity for an internal event. How do you feel about setting the boundary that game design is not a skill they're paying you for?
