Some rough numbers:
Arts contributes about $131B to Canada's GDP on roughly $1B in subsidies
Oil & Gas contributes about $200B on roughly $30B in subsidies
Arts supports about 1.1 million jobs in Canada
Oil & Gas supports about 900K jobs in Canada

Also, the arts just makes our lives better.

I have done enough work at the Alberta hospital and with CMHA to know that when people have access they can do so well, and be so much more happy. They need drs., access to community supports, a long journey to recovery. They can't do it alone. They go from being houseless, lonely; to having a life

For the benefit of the right wing hate mongers - this is what humanity looks like, from the Mother of one of the victims.
Nobody who is in good mental health takes a gun and shoots other people.
Sure, take away access to guns. But it's more important to deal with the root cause. Fund mental health.
"People are trying to politicize this. It's not about guns. It's not about transgenderism. It's about mental health. It's about a lack of resources. I truly believe that she did everything she could to try to help."

Good thread. And as others have pointed out in the replies, curiosity-driven STEM research now also goes largely unsupported.
My research is entirely curiosity-driven. I pay for that, financially and in other ways, every single day.
I'm just glad I'm not a conservative, entirely devoid of curiosity.
I'd like at add a few things to this. (1) humanists have not been able to convince any political party that curiosity-driven humanities research is a public good that should be funded using tax dollars. Republicans don't believe this, but neither do Democrats.
It's possible to do a non-reactionary critique of the current landscape of humanities research funding: www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

Hey EDMONTON, let's have an Urgent Conversation about Health Care.
This isn't about politics or ideology... its about objective facts!
Is HC going in the right direction? What can we all do about it?

Please help spread the word:

Wednesday of the following week.
The only urinal on this floor is still blocked.
The washroom floor is drenched with urine.
The stench is overwhelming.
No sign of a repair guy.
Patients come to this building.
I took a video of the piss cascade, but you don't want to see it.
But ....
Still number 3!
I used the washroom in my Dept on Friday. The urinal had not drained after the previous users. I added to the volume (we have only one urinal) and it then proceeded to flush and pour diluted piss all over the floor.
But that's okay because they've found a ranking table where we're 3rd in Canada 🤪

Their email subject was “Announcing our shared values”.
I thought “You called armed cops to a peaceful protest, cut all funding to daycare, fired someone for speaking out against genocide and ask the UCP to proof-read the President’s opinions. I’m amused that you think we share any values at all”.
The University of Alberta released their new values statement emphasizing a "spirit of community" that guides every decision they make

In January they slashed 100% of the affiliated child care budget that had been in place for decades despite every union on campus in opposition

THIS. WEEK.
Infections in Canada this week are expected to result in 5,400 hospitalizations, 800 premature deaths (people who die at least 1 year earlier than they would without COVID) and 15,000 new long COVID cases serious enough to limit daily life activities.

@aasua.bsky.social Is there something in our new collective agreement that requires us to be repeatedly embarrassed by Bill Flanagan and this Board of Governors?
Counter Signal and Keean Bexte, FFS!
Bill Flanagan, the President of the Univ of Alberta, said that the U of A was renouncing EDI because of "ideological bias." The far-right Counter Signal, founded by the vile extremist Keean Bexte, is running a petition supporting the move.

Not exactly liberating the U of A from ideological bias.

A year ago, U of A President Bill Flanagan said DEI was polarizing.

He was right and he remains so. It polarizes society between good and evil, ethics and ignorance, fairness and bigotry. Choosing the latter on all counts sustains a grand U of A tradition.

No, it really isn't.
You don't need an AR15.

I've been saddened today to learn that the University of Alberta is going down MAGA road and wants to abolish Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

So I've written to University President Bill Flanagan, warning him of the legal risks. Because the University may need suing.

Does this mean that our next Board of Governors and our next President will be appointed based entirely on merit?
They'll only appoint people qualified and capable of doing the bloody job, and not just because they're UCP donors and sycophants?
That's a change I could get behind.
New emails obtained by CBC through access of information show that before announcing the end of EDI at the University of Alberta, the president sent his announcement to the UCP before publication.

How's that for institutional neutrality?

As a former student and professor, I would remind the President and Board that equity is the process and equality is the outcome.

This policy change is unhelpful at a time when universities should be leading not retreating on important EDI work.

If anyone is looking for a really good road-biking app that gives a much more realistic experience than Zwift, I've been using Rouvy for the past 2 months. Put the bike on the trainer right up close to a big-screen TV, turn off "see other riders" and just ride in peace. Requires a power meter. (1/2)
