Thumb stuck out as I go, I'm just travelin' up the road. Maps don't do much for me, friend; I follow the weather & the wind.

Storm chaser/Sky photog. Fundraiser. Political guy. Capsaicinophile. Former college baseball coach/pitcher. Owned by GSD & 2 cats.

A year ago yesterday (thanks @donkeydownburst.bsky.social for reminding me), Colin and I found ourselves gobbling up some Jet's pizza along the shoreline of the UP of Michigan. Our original intent of the trip was to photograph fall colors, but the night skies definitely stole the show. What a night.

1 year ago about right now, @charliekruschek.com & I were sitting in my car, eating Jet’s Pizza while we awaited the next auroral substorm on the shore of Lake Superior. Over the next 3 hours, we’d get a few substorms, several portfolio shots, & the most serene experience of my life. Volume ⬆️. (1/2)

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

Really though, the best tool we’ve found for lightning trends is looking at the -10C level for 40dBz+
NASA SPoRT lightning stoplight tool is a great page to use to see how long it’s been since the last lightning flash/occurrence.

It’s really dumb that the rules say you have to have 9 guys in the lineup. Puts the Cubs at a huge disadvantage.

Not much enjoyable about this team these days.

It’s a nice vlog. I guarantee it.
One of my biggest frustrations growing up in Illinois was the "mesoscale accident". Photogenic funnels and tornadoes forming on days they shouldn't. I've since developed an unhealthy obsession with finding these accidents through tedious mesoscale analysis.

Let's try it.

The dichotomy of FanDuel: Someone out there probably bet Schwarber to be MVP. Schwarber didn’t do shit during the game, but then that bettor got the life preserver of the year. Someone out there also probably bet Alonso to be MVP and is now preparing to self-immolate, lol.

Historically, the period of week of July 13 (with the exception of 7/13/2004, which wasn’t a real day that existed) has been a great week for me, with tornado anniversaries on the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 19th and other good non-tornadic storms.

None was better than this one, 5 years ago today.
5 years ago today! I was super excited about the setup on July 15th, 2020 but early storms merged into a messy cluster across western Illinois. Hugged the couplet of a disorganized but still strongly rotating supercell and eventually... this happened!

If this proposed budget comes to fruition, it would be devastating for the weather and climate enterprise and a threat to the safety and security of the American public
What a tragedy this is even being proposed on paper... 💔

96/69 with a 23kt sustained wind.

I only find only one other observation at or above those thresholds, on 23 Aug 1948 (96/69 + 23kts as well). #iawx

If you can escape the clouds after a storm chase, the sunsets are some of the most remarkable you'll ever see. This was taken just four hours after being within a mile of a tornado.
