Science says we’ve been nurturing “gifted” kids all wrong
A major international review has upended long-held ideas about how top performers are made. By analyzing nearly 35,000 elite achievers across science, music, chess, and sports, researchers found that ...

Considering the services of a digital sin-eater in the new year. I'll write my posts out longhand with a fountain pen like a gentleman and leave them under a rock in the woods. Some horrible zoomer can collect them and do the degrading work of touching a telephone on my behalf.

Every week, Nature publishes yet another breathless puff piece about some AI startup, based only unpublished claims from the company and interviewing only those who work there.

How can the leading scientific journal publish piece after piece that would make Kevin Roose blush?

I think it's that...

I am on vacation (like real vacation). First night, what did I dream? That I woke up to a room full of my colleagues, eating breakfast and letting me know I missed the first class of the quarter.

Rewatching the old Grenada Television version of Sherlock Holmes over break. It’s not “good” in the way that most of you talk about “good tv” but I love it. Specifically, I love that the brilliant Jeremy Brett seems to be in a different show from everyone else.

Metallic snow (or maybe frost, depending on your definition of "snow") is radar-bright material at the tops of Venus’ highest mountains, such as Maxwell Montes (11 km high), possibly made of condensed lead sulfide and bismuth sulfide that sublimate at warmer altitudes and condense on mountaintops ❄️

The 6yo has declared that Six-Seven is "abandoned". Forbidden in the house. The 4yo gets scolded just for counting more than six things out loud.

Why is it abandoned? Because the boys at school can't stop saying it and they are "very annoying".

Due to the fragmented nature of network tv back in the day, that movie was the first time I'd ever heard that the saucer section could separate. Man I levitated out of my chair in that theater.
there’s is no truly great TNG movie (hot take?) but the part where the saucer crash lands on the planet blew my little baby brain apart
