Mary Wiseman as Cadet Sylvia Tilly, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets discussing the affects of the spore drive on Stamets' mental health. According to Mary Wiseman (and indeed the second photo in this post) this scene initially included an interruption from Wilson Cruz as Doctor Culber. Wiseman recalled: "Culber walks in, and then, like, Tilly has a conniption 'cause she immediately cannot keep a secret. That's something that I was playing. It was, like, the first sign I got that maybe I don't have to keep it anymore. I was like, 'Phew, this is the secret.'" The deleted scene including Wilson Cruz as Doctor Culber. Wiseman recalled: "Culber walks in, and then, like, Tilly has a conniption 'cause she immediately cannot keep a secret. That's something that I was playing. It was, like, the first sign I got that maybe I don't have to keep it anymore. I was like, 'Phew, this is the secret.'"

Sonequa Martin-Green as Specialist Michael Burnham in the Pahvan yurt. Tamara Deverell, the franchise's first female production designer, oversaw the creation of the yurt on stage at Pinewood Toronto Studios. According to Deverell, the structure was created (in part) to reduce how much of "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" would need to be filmed outdoors on location: "The network wanted them to get off the ship and go to a planet, so the writers called us here in production to think about ways that were feasible. In 10 minutes I came up with the idea of a membrane structure like a yurt, which was something I thought we could build [quickly]. Then we picked a place in a forest because it was supposed to be very idyllic. We ended up just VFXing our structure, which was built on stage, into a forest.”

The idea for, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum", an away mission episode was a directive from CBS to get the crew off the ship. However, according to Co-producer Ted Sullivan, conditions were uncomfortable at the Hilton Falls and Kelso Conservation Area filming sites: "It was hot, it was muggy, and it had just rained a whole bunch, so there was all this standing water... There were clouds of mosquitoes. You would breathe, and you'd breathe in mosquitoes. And poor Doug in all of that makeup, he would just take his gloves off and water would pour out of it. It was brutal... It was horrible."

It was really complicated and shaded and dark in a lot of ways, but then also there was such gentleness and there was such, I don't know, sweetness and love in it as well as the characters move forward. So, Shazad and I are both really grateful for how much we were able to do with each other."

In interviews following the release of his two appearances on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, Rainn Wilson was effusive about working with the cast: "I've loved it. Jason is, he is a very strong-willed human being. He has really strong ideas about what works and what doesn't work, and I love that. I got along great with him and we had a lot of fun together. I respect him as an actor a great deal and it was super-fun to square off against him. I've been admiring his work since The Patriot, for decades. I think he's an unheralded great actor. And the rest of the cast... I think Sonequa is the kindest, sweetest, person you'd ever want to meet, and she brings such heart to the role. It's a tricky role because she's educated by Vulcans, so she doesn't lead with her emotions, but Sonequa leads with her heart. I love working with everybody. I love the diversity of the cast. I think they're terrific, terrific actors. Doug Jones does a great job with Saru. I think he brings a lot of heart and humanity to (from) inside of all of that makeup and stuff. He's a big fan favorite. People are really loving him now, and I love that."

Jason Isaacs leaps onto a stunt mat with Oyin Oladejo, Doug Jones, and Rainn Wilson on the Discovery bridge set. According to Anthony Rapp production of "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad" was "frantic". To relieve some of the pressure, members of the cast including Jason Isaacs, Shazad Latif, Rainn Wilson along with the episode's director David M. Barrett played ping pong in the alley outside the STAR TREK: DISCOVERY soundstages. Wilson Cruz said, "This was an intense episode, and they played a lot."

According to Makeup Department Head of Prosthetic and Special F/X Makeup Glenn Hetrick, the techniques used to bring the cybernetic look of Airiam to life were cutting edge for the prosthetic makeup industry: "Airiam was a character at the top of our list when the producers wanted to do something on the bleeding edge of current tech. The pitch was always about raising the bar in terms of story and VFX, but it becomes increasingly difficult to create that impact with today's ever-more sophisticated audience. And anything truly new and exciting must possess creative elements that are being attempted for the first time."

According to Story Editor Erika Lippoldt, the largely stand alone "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad" was an intentional departure in tone by the STAR TREK: DISCOVERY writing staff: "We just always had this notion of, 'Let's just have one episode where it's kind of crazy and fun and, like, sci-fi-wacky, you know, kind of comedic stuff,' and that kind of all got poured into that one episode."

Prior to the release of Mudd's second appearance on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, Wilson discussed the producers' intent to flesh out his character: "When I spoke to them — we had a conference call about Harry Mudd when they first offered it to me — and the writers and producers were like, 'Listen, this is a modern-age, this is a real Harry Mudd. He’s got to be a real, flesh-and-blood character. He’s got a backstory — he’s got history. He’s got to have an edge to him for it all to work.' So I knew that this would be a great opportunity for me. I was really excited to dig into that, you know?"
