5 years ago, there was a bloody, lawless, and deadly attack on our nation’s Capitol. A group of criminal thugs broke out in riots and stormed our Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election at the direction of the President of the United States.

It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

Man, it's gonna suck having to explain to our grandkids that we didn't want any of this but we didn't shut down the country to stop it.

Four generations of my family have served our country. Service is in my blood. The President wouldn’t know anything about that.

intermittently i've been getting weeks-old posts repeating in my feed - from folks i don't even follow. have others dealt with this? if so, how do you get rid of it?

i don't need commentary that the refs in seattle and detroit did good jobs at the end of games in mid-december anymore.

first monday in 2026: holidays are done, nothing but the grim gray slog ahead.
it's also monday, week 51, day 350.
last week: illegal invasion that shames the nation and threatens americans everywhere.
this week: celebrating the fifth anniversary of our glorious new holiday, jan. 6.

the playbook isn’t all that imaginative, but that lets us know what their objectives are.
I posted earlier that Trump would try to grab Greenland and claim it's for "security reasons."

Hitler did the same with the Netherlands.

Just follow the playbook.
Trump: "We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so strategic. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place. We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security. And Denmark is not gonna be able to do it ... the EU needs us to have it"

Adding: it seems relevant that Marco Rubio's Florida buddy David Rivera - they shared a house for 5 years - is an associate of both Maduro and new president Delcy Rodriguez. Rivera is currently awaiting trial for acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Venezuela. Lots of old ties here. 6/
Thought it would be a good time to check in on this case: Marco Rubio buddy David Rivera, who was indicted 3 years ago for attempting to broker a deal for Maduro.

Moving forward, this is gonna be a feature of foreign policy shakedowns.

Mark Lutter’s Charter Cities Institute (CCI) has been eyeing Venezuela since 2019, has received $$$ from Emergent Ventures (backed by Thiel), & calls Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale a “supporter”. Lutter & I just had an interesting exchange. See posts 40-43…1/ threadreaderapp.com/thread/20074...

as mentioned, we got two days of new year’s hopeful energy and optimism. that’s apparently all we get.
It's January 3rd and we already have a top contender for skeet of the year. It has everything: the Fed up newscaster, the slamming of papers, the timing with the jingle, and a concise caption that acknowledges a universal mood. Everything comes together in perfect harmony.

Dem leadership will fail us yet again.
Another govt funding deadline is coming up in which Dems on paper will have leverage in the Sen.

If we had a true opposition - Schumer/Jeffries would use that leverage 2 rein in Trump instead of just looking to score messaging points on healthcare, affordability.

Otherwise this is all useless.
On whether Democrats would use the impending government shutdown in 30 days as leverage on Venezuela "Let's first get all the facts out. That's what we're endeavoring to do right now, and our first ability to do that will be the War Powers Act of this week."

I’d go with a first edition of Ball Four.
Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.

An indication of how excited folks are about Mamdani's mayoralty: My most-liked-and-reposted post of Day One of 2026 is already bigger than anything I posted in 2025.
I was wondering what Mamdani's first executive order would be, and I'm not disappointed by this.

He has wiped off the books EVERY Eric Adams executive order issued on or after September 26, 2024, the day Adams was indicted on federal bribery charges.
