Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

So, I think it's time I begin, in detailed specifics, talking about the mess that is Unbound / Boundless as a book publisher, in essence stealing most of a years royalties from me and many other authors, as a result of poor financial decisions, and legal BS.

I think the only way in which the people saying concern about AI energy demand isn't justified are correct is a situation in which the tools are simply so stunningly shit that no matter how hard companies try, they simply don't get used enough to cause a major jump in power demand

I'd love for ordinary people to have the power collectively to stop this waste, but I wonder whether most of the energy use actually occurs in direct response to end users anyway. Most AI functionality seems so ill-conceived that its designers already know they have to force it into use.

His rapid reinstatement is an indictment of the tech industry. We are beholden to a meta-cult-of-personality. We automatically deify those with the biggest shows and promises. We're addicted to the drug of fawning, uncritical servility, and we'd hardly recognise rational consensus-building.

Surely consumer and environmental law should each do something to prevent this.

The seller should be on the hook for devices that cease working as a result of the seller's own actions. Deliberately bricking devices en masse should essentially be illegal.

The AI cult redux:

1. Nvidia makes graphics cards (GPUs) that are essentially very fast numerical supercomputers.

2. Bitcoin/blockchain happened. To "earn" BtC you have to crunch lots of numbers as fast as possible.

3. People bought so many GPU cards that there was a global shortage ...
