We have made it to the year 2026, the setting for the Giorgio Moroder version of Metropolis.

Any fans of the Dronarivm label out there? They are having a pay what you want sale, and apart from a few familiar names (Machinefabriek, Aaron Martin, Chihei Hatakeyama) I'm not sure where to start with their voluminous catalog.

What was the last movie or TV show you watched in 2025?

Hello from 2026, where to my knowledge nothing has gone wrong yet, maybe if we stay still and don't move things will just keep working fine

Serving chicken strips to Dr. Jack Kevorkian, his wife and his lawyer
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

New films I gave 4.5 stars to in 2025 (in no order)
SINNERS
THE MASTERMIND
POP
NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE
FRANKENSTEIN
PSYCHO THERAPY
SENTIMENTAL VALUE
THE SECRET AGENT

I rarely give 5 stars on a first viewing, but REFLECTION IN A DEAD DIAMOND earned it.

That's nine. Make SKETCH #10.

This might be the last LP I listen to in 2025, and I'm going out on a high. It's my first play of this gossamer-delicate strings and electronics and things textured landscape, and it's inspirational. Strange and comforting.

Way more useful than that Thurston Moore list I posted yesterday, particularly if (like me) you're drawn to free jazz and metal. Great to see Aotearoa's Beastwars given notice, one of my fave gigs of the year.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

My favourite self-made Godzilla artworks this year. A less prolific year than normal, but excited by my late breaking discovery I can transform inherited lieder records that even op shops don't want into Godzilla clocks.

Cinephiles at a party: “Claire Denis did her best work when Agnes Godard was her DP, no relation to Jean Luc, whose films were shot guerrilla style by Raoul Coutard, but clearly influenced by Hollywood DP’s Gregg Toland and James Wong Howe…Wait, what’s your name again? Sorry, I’m so bad with names!”

20 minutes to go in THE MASTERMIND. I think his master plan is about to be revealed.

Anyone know if this is in the wild anywhere in NZ?
At the risk of overhyping it, DUNE might just be the most extraordinary pinball machine I've ever played. When the worm caught the ball magnetically in its maw and then slowly rose out of the cabinet floor while lights flashed and the whole thing vibrated, it was an out of body experience.

I keep forgetting that a record came out this year with my name on it. Maybe because I feel like my contributions are minor relative to my colleagues, but still, it's the first album that's actually credited to me (as opposed to a band name).

The more I think about it, the more I think "a movie comes out and people enjoy it, but don't make it their entire identity and start fake religions about it and demand 23 spinoffs and then complain about them and get into flame wars, but simply go to the next one" is precisely what I want more of

Followup to previous post about a fictitious top ten book recommendations list, which Dylan's been diligently digging into.

Tl;dr: Everything online is broken. Everything. And also on fire and irreparably polluted.

Merry Christmas!
Overworked journalists, trying to do basic fact-checking on the press release they thought would make nice content will also find themselves attacked by AI, as their quick searches appear to confirm the listed books are real... Thanks to AI using the press release itself as a source of "knowledge"
I was curious how AI would react to these book titles and so Googling them, the Gemini search result insists they are real books. Opting to engage and then ask for a citation... It now cites this press release 🤦‍♂. Only when challenged for any other source, it admits it's not listed anywhere else

If you’re not an Apple Music subscriber, I think there are services that can convert Apple Music playlist links into something that works with whatever music-streamer you use. Here’s also the playlist in print, should you wish to make it yourself, manually. Enjoy!
