I'd guess that 85-90% of American scientists would be ineligible for future funding under this law, maybe close to 100% in the R1 universities. So much for funding proposals based on scientific merit.

Apart from being sinophobes, the people pushing this have no clue how science or higher ed works.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated

@sfdirewolf.bsky.social just passed away. What a heartbreaking loss. And a reminder of how important Teen Vogue was.
It’s been a pleasure working with Lex and everyone in the politics vertical at Teen Vogue. I’m heartbroken that my column, Disability Visibility, is gone. Teen Vogue was one of the few places that published disabled journalists regularly. I just spent the last 2 months working on my next column
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

Yesterday’s executive order is about 10 months later than expected but on target to do exactly as predicted. It will fully reverse protections enacted under Biden, and resurrect church-run, faith-based systems like we used to have before public social services.

The weirdest thing about this discourse is that states with shorter school closures have the same amount of learning loss! I keep waiting for all the punditry on this to catch up with basic facts
Every time Covid and learning loss hits the news, people act like the only factor is folk staying home and learning online, rather than… Living through a global mass death event.

God, that’s bleak.
Wisconsin Republicans have put forward a bill demanding pregnant people have “catch kits” to take their miscarriages to the doctor or hospital.

This is happening at the same time they gut healthcare.

It’s an egregious violation of bodily autonomy… and who pays for their hospital trip?

Important context that the social work Code of Ethics says that you are to directly address concerns with the person before taking any other action if you think a social worker is engaging in inappropriate behavior. Someone should share that info with the student.
The lecturer never heard directly from the student. The removal was justified on the basis of a new state law promoting a diversity of opinions in university classrooms, similar to laws pushed in Ohio and Florida to tilt the discussions rightward
