This is a devastating story. And I don't think the New York Times of all fucking places should be allowed to run a story like this without at least a paragraph acknowledging the role their newspaper had in mainstreaming the hatred that killed Lia.
A devastating story about the life and death of Lia Smith, a transgender woman and college student targeted by conservatives online because she briefly participated on the school's diving team. Lia was found dead by suicide last fall at the age of 21.

Big Tech is offering you a Faustian bargain. It promises to remove all the friction from life, to keep you from having to think or study, and the result is your brain will become pudding, you’ll become incapable of creativity or communication. They want to make you a non-person.

I've spent all day struggling to write a single page of a popular science article. I bang away at a word processor; give up; start diagramming on paper. Take some notes; draft a few sentences in pen; return to the computer...and very slowly I figure out what I was trying to say in the first place.

I think the key problem is not the people but the incentive structure, which is largely driven by (legacy) media: being loud and “controversial” is rewarded much more than being quiet and right.*

* particularly if you have the usual privileges (eg class, gender, race).
i think a (perhaps underappreciated) aspect of this whole situation is the extent to which every elite profession is filled with people who excel at drawing attention and want to be famous more than they want to do the actual job

I've just signed @olivia.science's Open Letter to Dutch Universities calling on them to Stop the Uncritical Adoption of AI Technologies in Academia.

Sign it to show support. The work she and her colleagues are doing is so helpful in discussing how AI isn't inevitable in law, art and writing too!

Also remember there is no algorithm here. Your quote-posts to dunk on them are helping them out when they can't game the system like they do on other platforms. Don't make their jobs easier for them. Just block and move on.
Remember:

- they DO NOT CARE about your arguments/rebuttals

- they DO NOT CARE about your dunks

- the person running the accounts was specifically hired to drive engagement BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY; it’s the algorithm they’re catering to

This is a game, and to them you are data to be manipulated.
