Rep. Jason Crow on ICE/CBP expansion: "They have hired people without background checks. They have hired people without training. They have no standards for the use of force. They have created a law enforcement agency that's filled with people that want to abuse our community."

The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023.

The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets.

There was an abduction in front of my apartment this morning. Afterwards, a Hennepin County Sheriff car drove by. Around 10-15 of us screamed at them for help, seeking assistance with the abandoned, window-smashed car. Some ran after them. They continued driving. 😑

Breaking character: The changes at WaPo and CBS are not ones that make economic sense. They're about hating liberals, they're about some media higher-ups hating their mostly liberal audience. It's that simple.

one thing worth observing is that a) even republican election officials are very jealous of their authority and b) the more unpopular trump gets, the less likely he is unable to leverage the rhetorical power of his office www.nytimes.com/2026/02/04/u...

I got in SO MUCH trouble for this hugely viral tweet back in 2018 (from MAGA types mostly) but I stand by it (and in fact at the time the Auschwitz Museum defended me when people yelled at me that Auschwitz was a “death camp” not a concentration camp). My DENTIST congratulated me for this one

The Trump regime's plan to rig the 2026 election is becoming clearer:

- Send ICE to polling locations to intimidate voters
- Attempt to federalize the elections and seize control of administration in critical states
- Cast doubt on the results and declare they've won
- If needed, seize ballot boxes

It can’t be fixed. It can’t be reformed. It can’t be saved. It must be abolished. It must be completely ended, eliminated. And we must start over.

I’m talking about ICE.

America...
...is arresting journalists
...is kidnapping citizens with no charges
...is running concentration camps
...is killing protestors
...is threatening allies
...is invading neighbours

US higher ed is under attack. Harvard refusing Trump's unreasonable, lie-based, often illegal demands is making a difference.

I especially appreciate how @ryanenos.bsky.social explains that research grants aren't favors, they're competitive contracts serving national priorities as set by Congress.
"We are now in a system of competitive authoritarianism. And it’s just about whether we manage to take our democracy back from that."

On the pod, @ryanenos.bsky.social is so good on Harvard pulling back from surrender to Trump, and on need for institutions to fight:

Big, profitable corporations often pay a lower tax rate than ordinary people like teachers and firefighters. Small businesses are paying more while massive corporations use loopholes to pay nothing.

Let’s close those loopholes and make corporations pay their fair share.
