But in 2025—as US democracy is being warped at speed— democratization claims should ring hollow. Just as the internet provided widespread access to *dis*information, chatbots can replace habits democracy needs: questioning, reflecting, researching, interrogating sources & their validity & accuracy.

My grandfather died of Polio, when my mom was 3 years old, leaving behind a wife and 3 children. I’m certain he would have welcomed the vaccine and the opportunity to see his children grow. Shame on these folks for trying to take away the option and for sowing doubt in lifesaving medicine.
I had polio when i was 9. I was taken from my parents & placed in a Hospital for contageous diseases- the polio ward. I would see them once a week - thru the glass window at the end of my ward. I could not walk. It was terrifying. Kids died. Iron lungs were awful. Dont let RFK Jr ban the vaccine

College freshman today were 6 years old in the 2012 election.

A student of mine (age 20) told me after class that he appreciates when I explain how US politics and media were different before, because the Trump era is all he’s seen.

This is what young Americans think politics is. It’s normal now.
I think that folks aren't seriously thinking about the implications of young adults who know nothing other than a country which has normalized MAGA politics, God help us all.

My view is that extrajudicial vigilante killings are not good, but the incuriosity of well-compensated columnists about why millions of people’s horrific, life-changing experiences with a sprawling, cruel, bankruptcy-inducing health care system might lead them to feel differently makes me really sad

I am a librarian in Chicago and the ways people conflate comfort and safety are not only toxic to them and the people around them, but actually dangerous. Discomfort is healthy, necessary and ultimately unavoidable in a country that has abandoned so many of its citizens to despair and deprivation.

people say “you need to start living in the real world” but they forget that the real world includes lupines and lightning bugs and ginger beer and starlight and sea coasts and Renoir paintings and Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos and fog banks and foxes playing in snow.

there are three taxonomic kingdoms of humor: gags, bits, and japes. each dominates the zeitgeist in their own time. for the past few years we've been in a bits era, but with the global drift towards fascism and the re-election of donald trump, i expect to see a strong resurgence of japes

It can be so hard NOT to compare yourself to others sometimes, esp when browsing social media. To avoid getting sucked into a black hole of envy/resentment, try VERY hard to focus on enjoying your own journey at your own pace. Find your own joy.
