Let us dance together above the terrible abyss.
This is. And thou art. There is no safety. There is no end. The word must be heard in silence. There must be darkness to see the stars. The dance is always danced above the hollow place, above the terrible abyss.

All I can say is I have a rock solid conviction that the way to win in an era of AI arms races is to simply get even more human. Embrace the weird, quirky, opinionated, sharp, friction. In a sea of AI generated paste, all seeking to hit the average audience, that’s what’s gonna stand out.

Write letters in support of your library, to the board and to your local paper. Commit to attending a couple board meetings. Contact your political reps about doing something about the gutting of IMLS. Go to protests. Anything. Just get involved and advocate.

This is about curbing campus activism. But it's also an effort to cut off another leg of the funding on which universities stand.

At many schools, >10% of the students are international. And they're much more likely than domestic students to pay full price.

These actions will drive many away.
Hundreds of international students have just received an email telling them their visas have been revoked.

The ‘justification’ is campus activism or social media posts.

I keep thinking about how when you are part of the first wave of a new field, the best frame of mind you can have is to hope you will be surpassed — because it means people have built on what you started. And if you’re very good, you helped folks get to the place where they can do that work & shine.

Here is a script you can use for any issue. Find your reps' # at reps.fyi or 5calls.org. Every time you see a news story that horrifies you: call, or something else about it. It matters to say what you believe. You are setting a norm.

Here's a poster version of the DIY Web Archiving zine's front cover, with some added text if you want to print copies for some space where people can take them—you can hang this poster above or nearby:
