"Of the slaying of what one thing does Gotama approve?”

The Buddha:

“Having killed anger you sleep in ease.
Having killed anger you do not grieve.

The noble ones praise the slaying of anger
—with its honeyed crest & poison root—
for having killed it you do not grieve.”

from Saṁyutta Nikāya 1:71

Yrs ago, I studied under Thich Nhat Hanh. He spoke about how Buddhism doesn’t demand giving up your existing faith — that practicing Buddhism can help you understand Christianity more deeply. Someone said, “Then you’ll have a mixed up salad.” He replied, “What’s wrong with a fruit salad?”

Now of course, Trump does a lot of things that are illegal, so take that as you may.

According to this think tank the president is not permitted to declare martial law. Invoking the Insurrection Act is not the same as martial law.
Martial Law, Explained
The law surrounding the concept is complicated and unsettled. Congress should pass legislation that better defines its scope.

This is more extreme, with heavier impacts, than "Operation Midway Blitz" here in the Chicago area, which we thought was plenty bad enough with only 250 extra CBP agents here.

Minneapolis has at least 2,000 extra agents right now.
It’s hard to know if people outside MN understand how much of life is grinding to a halt here because of Trump’s occupation. Schools have shut down, businesses are scaling back hours or closing because their employees aren’t safe. The whole city is weighted down.

That was not an act of fanaticism. It was an act of political protest against the persecution of Buddhism in Vietnam by the government of Ngo Dinh Diem.

It is not common for Buddhist monks, nor do Buddhist teachings ever call for self-immolation--indeed, it might violate the Buddha's teachings

Did you know Bangkok is a map of the universe?

Founded in 1782, the city was laid out to reflect the Hindu-Buddhist mandala cosmological model, with the ruler at the center and increasingly lesser classes in concentric circles further away from him

Walz is on Trump’s side materially even if his words are oppositional to Trump’s. We realized this a long time ago in Illinois with Governor Pritzker.

“Without incident”
The incident is the police arresting the protestors.

This is their job. Police exist to violently suppress dissent, not to find murderers or to protect people.

IMO the reasons for more male suicide are that men have less solidarity with other men, less emotional support, have a lesser understanding of their emotional state, are frankly more likely to hold views counterproductive to mental health, and are less likely to treat mental health conditions

I think many women would say the same thing about women, minus the suicide part. Men surprisingly often completely abandon their responsibilities as providers for children or in working in the home caring for family. Women aren't quitting the grueling job of making home and family work

It stops being fun in that range. I once worked outdoors in that kind of weather for months in Missouri. The humidity was high too. When it got down into the low 30s Celsius we thought it felt so great

Beyond wild to me to see Americans, after *everything*, still saying "thank you for your service" when that service consisted of invading foreign countries.

And when I say cultivating lovingkindness protects us, I mean not just on a karmic level but also here and now... I appreciate the decrease in my heart rate, the greater feelings of calm and relaxation and the anger fading somewhat, after practicing lovingkindness meditation for several minutes.

In a morning meditation gathering a friend mentioned this peace walk, the monks, & Aloka the rescue dog. What a beautiful, joyful counterpoint to the darkness in the news. Peace is an option. Peace in every step, to quote Thich Nhat Hanh. Be peace. ☮️🙏❤️
The “Walk for Peace” Monk’s and Aloka the rescue dog entered South Carolina today on their 2,300 walk across America to show us that peace is an option during our lives on earth.

I don't think spreading the conflict goes along with what these venerable Buddhist monks are trying to accomplish here. They are offering lovingkindness to all sentient beings, regardless of those sentient beings' reaction.

It's difficult to remind myself of this in these times, but over and over again my Buddhist practice has been helpful in coping.

Sitting with the anger, rage, and sadness that may arise from the horror of samsara but not reacting damagingly.

Cultivating lovingkindness toward all beings helps us.
Greed, hatred, and delusion are terrible poisons. But the dharma is an even more powerful antidote.
