my favorite tas trivia is that for the first season the animation studio wouldn't budget for new paint, they were using the same pallet as tiny toons. the distinctive look came from doing backgrounds on black construction paper using the playful tones of a loony toons show.
Were 90s kids clamoring for a Batman cartoon with 1930s Art Deco aesthetics? Is that what the market demanded? Or did some really smart creative people have a vision and make a genre-defining hit that sustained 20 years of TV shows? If you want success look for vision, not just metrics.

Also important not to forget the invisble support these "great men of science" had - in Crick's case, a loving wife who organised everything domestically (inc house moves, children etc), and a series of secretaries/assistants (all female, I think) who dealt with admin.
Loved this brilliant biography of Crick by @matthewcobb.bsky.social But what struck me from the start: it's also a portrait of a lost time in science: no grant applications or teaching, big travel budgets: the job only to think, talk & get science done. Future scientific biogs will be so different.

OpenAI is doing enormous evil and people who try to push its products on us should be relentlessly questioned.
When universities tout their partnerships with OpenAI, parents, faculty and everyone really should be asking how they intend to account for the increasing evidence that their technology is hurting people, especially young and vulnerable people. How many instances of harm will be enough?
