Geek of food and tech. Plus sundry other things.
One of the few stories my dad shared with me of his childhood was of his mother telling him that if he didn’t eat the bread crusts, a giant would trap him in a house made from all the uneaten crusts; he would be forced to eat them to escape.

Now I wonder if the house I grew up in was made of bread.

Don’t sleep on this one, folks.

Yes, the SAVE Act is bad, but repealing Section 230 has -bipartisan support-.

Call your congressional delegation and let them know that 230 must be protected.

I love this image.

When I was little we had a copy of Milton Bradley’s game MEMORY from the late 60s or early 70s.

This reminds me of some of my favorite tiles from that game.

Women:

Remember yourself at 16, 14, 11, 10, and even 9.

Then think about grown men molesting you.

At 10 or so, you’re in the fourth or fifth grade.

When I was in the fourth grade, I was thinking about our school play.
“Raskin also said that he saw ‘references to 17-year-old girls, 16-year-old girls, 14-year-old girls, 11-year-old girls, 10-year-old girls, and I saw a reference today to a 9-year-old girl. So it is a really gruesome and grim story.’“ www.nbcnews.com/politics/tru...

Last week the far right started peddling a narrative that the outrage over Epstein is a moral panic. Today, like clockwork, a more polite version of that narrative appears in the Atlantic.

It would be nice to sit back, all smug and cozy, and say, “Look what these racist idiots did to themselves.” But, alas…
“It could take years to restore Brexit losses”

Especially if Farage comes along and tears up the ‘reset’ as he threatens.

Honest to god.. it’s such a tedious, idiotic, resource-sapping mess. There’s really nothing patriotic about it. Prejudice costs such a lot.

Please, please, please, don’t try to engage your Black coworkers in “organic dialogue” about their struggles. That’s a fucking nightmare.
I'm pretty sure I'm right. Most folks learn about other people's struggles through organic dialogue entered into willingly and with trust, and are quite fairly distrustful and offended when their bosses demand such vulnerability at work -- doubly so when they farm it out to contract lecturers
That’s wild cause Black people were just trying to go to work without dealing with racism, sorry you had to endure that tho

The man still does not get it.

You can’t reform ICE or CBP now. They’re fundamentally corrupted.

He should be talking about unwinding DHS and tearing CBP and ICE apart and reconstituting a sane, properly run immigration agency.
Democrats want commonsense reform for ICE:

End the roving patrols and racial profiling.

Take accountability and abide by the same rules as local police.

Masks need to come off, body cameras need to stay on—no secret police in the United States of America.

I’ll post another recommendation to read this book.

It weaves the Satanic Panic, the rise of Televangelists, magical thinking, political Christianity, and ritualized child abuse by evangelicals into a coherent narrative that explains much of the last few decades.
ps if u want a sense of why people seem so zealously to believe themselves to be pure, just, & right while carrying out acts of unimaginable cruelty, do i have a book for you

How many times in your life have you heard a member of Congress or someone on TV say “we can’t afford it” when talking about something small but very important? It’s been happening my entire life. We can’t afford it? They’re putting seven times the annual budget of the EPA into immigrant detention.

Elite Blunders?

I danced under that name in the 90s.
Social movements are more likely to have success when three factors are present: elite conflict, shifting public opinion, and elite blunders.

Mass collective action can create the conditions for these factors to emerge and deepen.
