Like when people say they are incompetent, at what exactly? They are succeeding at doing exactly what they wanted to do.

Everyone sat around talking about how these people were incredibly stupid and then they managed to successfully implement large swathes of the plan that they all told us they were going to execute and you really have to wonder who is the stupid in this equation

The work that scholars and researchers actually do is the work that people *think* AI is doing. You read all sorts of things. You make connections. You notice where the holes are — what *hasn’t* been observed, questioned, investigated. You synthesize it into something that has never existed before.

Published a book about Scottish music publishers 1880-1951:- A Social History of Amateur Music-Making and Scottish National Identity (Routledge, 2025); and a couple of articles.
Academics: what's the best bit of knowledge you created this year?

I co-authored a new model of the Irish Neolithic, effectively rewriting social structure and the role of large funerary monuments for the creation of community identities
What historians (and other scholars do) is create knowledge. We should use that phrase more and talk about what it means. I think we don't, and it's part of why AI enthusiasts are confused when we don't readily agree that our work can be replicated/replaced by their products.

Less pettily, there's just so much in this amazing world to wonder about that it seems so sad to abdicate doing that.
My personal 2c on the AI in academia discourse is that if I discover you have used AI to replace your reading or writing, you are going on a literal list.

I am that petty. I don't want to deal with people who don't actually understand their areas.

where are the other sonic fans who think this movie is ass. i only see negative reviews from people who think very little of the idea of a sonic the hedgehog movie
The 'Sonic The Hedgehog 3' movie was released 1 year ago today in theatres.

was discussing a short story with some friends last night, about a future where ai are treated as “digital people” and someone raised: is there a level at which ai could advance such that you’d accept it as a person, or otherwise sentient?

the thing that fucks me up most about ai use is when people have expertise in one area of a collaborative medium and use ai for the rest. asking for help is hard and so is the risk of being let down, but if we don’t keep trying with each other, what do we have left?

I didn’t know you were a visual artist! These are wonderful!
Finally time for sketches of my Kalos favorites; most of these are among my favorite designs from the whole series! Had already sketched most of these for something or another at some point in the past, but the last three generations will be mostly untrodden territory!

Woody Guthrie was born in Okemah, Oklahoma. He died in Queens. He understood (and celebrated) both places as American, and as American in ways that resonated with each other.

That understanding wasn't unusual in those days. (It wasn't universal, but it wasn't unusual.) It's almost dead now.

honestly i’m impressed that culture shifts of the last 20 years—increased social justice awareness, right wing backlash, increased surveillance of the specific words people use—has brought us to a point where a new slur drops and my response is “good, we need that”
This is the correct term

Recently when faced with strife, I’ve asked myself “what would Superman do” and then “what would Megan Thee Stallion do” and that’s definitely helped because the answers are always “be kind to others and look for ways to help” and “keep making art and being so hot that it drives people insane”

This. People often assume that writing fantasy is easier than conventional fiction, because you can just make up anything. No, because if you can’t write ‘reality’ convincingly, the fantasy elements will fail even harder. You have to make the reader believe, and fantasy is fiction within fiction.
A couple people so far have suggested that if a movie has flying aliens in it, the worldbuilding doesn't need to make any sense.

I'd argue that in a story with fantastic elements set in a "real-ish" world, making the world as credible as you can is what makes the fantastic parts more believable.

using intuitive human relationship concepts to check my understand of set theory

if an operation is a relation on a set between from and to that same sets

eg addition is an operation because it relates 2 and 4 to 6, 10 and 0 to zero, etc.

is procreation an operation on the set of humans/animals?

maybe this is why i like set theory so much, bc it’s biggest applications are about how i can conceptualize things
like, i’ve been learning about set theory, where x = y iff x and y have the same elements. I’ve also been learning javascript, where an object is a set of key/value pairs.

this has made me think about what we mean when we say two things are the same—ie, that the only relevant properties are shared
