The disaster that’s about to unfold when the council remove the modal filters on the Braid estate.

The classic “George Watson’s” rat run will become a thing again, increasing traffic on residential streets far beyond the original scheme

Infrastructure design is by far the most effective of the three.

Thankfully there are quick, low-cost and effective ways to make streets safe:

✅ Pedestrian zones
✅ Bus-gates
✅ Modal filters
✅ Low traffic neighbourhoods

We hope to see them on the ground very soon. Delays cost lives!
I’ve made it clear that road safety is a priority for me and my administration in the City Chambers. Behavioural change, infrastructure design and active enforcement are the three key elements required to ensure Edinburgh’s roads remain safe for all.

Low Traffic Corstorphine "deeply concerned" about road safety

Glad road safety is a priority. So why is the Quiet Route being removed in the Braid Estate? Having reduced traffic by 4,000 vehicles (40%) since 2018, without a significant increase in traffic on the main alternative route, why would anyone want to prioritise rat-running drivers and reverse this?

Now do roads.

Why does public transport need to make a profit in order to be a success, but when assessing (climate-wreaking, car-use-inducing) road building projects the financing and operational costs are ignored?
The real questions are when will Edinburgh Trams make a profit? Latest results for 2023 show £11.8m loss before tax after operating for 10 years at a loss. How much does it cost Edinburgh taxpayers to repay construction debt?

The Bike Station comes highly recommended as a place to get a decent quality and affordable bike. Especially for those little legs that seem to grow centimetres by the week 🚸

Your irregular reminder of the scale of disparity between trunk/major roads and cycle funding in England. This is the five years 2018/19-2024/25

One benefit of trying to cycle in the snow today.. it's the only time drivers don't go above the 20mph speed limit .

Having seen both the massive sharp-edged Cybertruck & the cute little Microlino in real life this w/e at Everything Electric, here is my proposal for managing cars in cities: Spagetti-measure style holes at the end of every street. If your vehicle can fit through the hole, it's allowed on that road.

So, about rain… 🌧️

Post a picture of a well-used cycle lane and pretty soon someone will reply “Ha! Just wait till it’s raining!” in an everyone-should-use-a-car-for-all-journeys-QED tone of voice

So to save time in future, I’m going to save my response here. A thread follows:
