Pro safe cycling infrastructure, pro minimum passing distance legislation.

Ditched my car in 2022, bought a cargo bike and get around using that and public transport

When asked how people like to travel, workshop participants cut car use by half: from 37% to 19% while bus use tripled. A great insight from the recent co-creation workshop on how conversations can shape smarter, greener mobility 🇮🇪 @cyclingincork.bsky.social @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social

Yeah - I know people in West Cork and North Cork who are seeing connectivity between towns and villages that they just didn't have before - older people in particular - able to hop on a bus, do a bit of shopping, maybe stop off for a drink or a cup of tea and back home again - Greens got no credit!

I'm a bit of a nerd about this - but it's hard to quantify just how popular Local Link buses have been in 'rural Ireland' - new one will link villages from Cork to Kerry that haven't had a bus service since the 1960s... www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-n...

Between 2023 and 2024, the number of cars entering Galway City Centre increased by 3% but the modal share of people travelling by car is down -- this is thanks to stronger growth in bus and rail passengers, up by 25% and 6%. That's according to a traffic count conducted by the National Transport Authority and Galway City Council, which took place last November for the second time, meaning there is now the first set of figures to compare.

The mixing of the two in media coverage is extremely unhelpful, and shows a complete lack of interest/understanding of the basics. A quick search for "cycling in NL" would quickly show the difference. First question for any guest talking about infra should be "would you let your kids use it?"

Patrick O'Donovan speaking with Claire Byrne on @rteradio1.bsky.social just now, talking about cycling.

It's quite clear from his comments that his primary concept of cycling is biking for leisure.

No harm in that, but the big challenge to solve is cycling for transport.
