I'm going to do a history exploration of shmups, like I did with fighting games a few years ago.
I will play all shmups, beginning with the ones in arcades, starting from... 1962. It will allow me to see trends and some influences, and determine once and for all which is "the first shmup to do X".

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

Qix is a pretty perfect game on its own, which is one reason why the sequel, Volfied, might seem a bit unnecessary. (The other is that terrible name - what were they thinking?)
But Volfied does add some new tricks and manages to be a better game than you'd imagine!

The Classic Arcade and Console Era (1972-1989) - Volfied (a.k.a. Ultimate Qix or Qix Neo)
This late-80s sequel to Qix that adds in some new shoot ‘em up-style twists!

Did you know that from 1991 to 1995, more than 200 demos were featured on national French TV in the show named "Micro Kid's"?

Apparently a lot of people online think games aren't as fun anymore, but that could not be farther from the truth. There's more great games than ever now, so where is this coming from? As always, the culprit is capitalism.

This is pretty cool - a real 8 bits hardware platform. Although outputting only composite in this age where modern TVs only have HDMI input is certainly a choice.

I think an important part of becoming an adult male is realizing that anyone appealing to your ‘masculinity’ is trying to use your insecurity against you to sell you something. Don’t fall for this shit! You’re fine just the way you are, these assholes can all get fucked.
I’m sorry, but a goofy looking guy who grew up a privileged son of a pediatrician and has a phd in social theory from the university of Goethe and started in tech by investing an inheritance left to him by his grandfather talking about being a “dude” is very, very funny to me.

absolutely not, fuck them, if we cant have single payer and must suffer the slings of capitlaism at all time the dumbass ai bros and vc that backed them can rot in fucking hell
my hot AI take is that regardless of how we feel about it, bailing out the big AI companies may be *necessary* to avoid long-term systemic harm to real people

I set this to "warn" and I'm so excited to see which of my friends are canonically rude
If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

Stop sharing AI slop.
It's one thing if you don't know or just made a mistake. No need to breathe down someones neck b/c its harder to tell nowadays.
But if you do know (ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO KNOW) even if you're posting it to make fun of it or sharing it unironically... consider not doing that.

I'm sorry but the guy held his breath 29 *MINUTES* ?!? I'm not sure I can hold mine 29 seconds!

From denying genocides to promoting far right talking points, it's goal is very much to shape thought in a post truth world.

You browse through Game Machine magazine enough, and you see that Tokyo Wars dominates the charts in 1997, and was still doing okay going into 1998. Wild that this is the first time the game is getting a home release of any sort.

I hope they do a new physical version with all the DLC (Namco, Intellivision etc) because despite the fact that I have zero nostalgia for the platforms, this collection keeps getting better.
Just over a week until the Namco Legendary Pack DLC launches for Atari 50!
This DLC includes multiple versions of Atari PAC-MAN, GALAGA, GALAXIAN, DIG DUG, and XEVIOUS. 🎉
