I'm going to do a history exploration of shmups, like I did with fighting games a few years ago.

I will play all shmups, beginning with the ones in arcades, starting from... 1962. It will allow me to see trends and some influences, and determine once and for all which is "the first shmup to do X".

First game of 2026 finished! Götzendiener (PC Engine CD, Studio Alex-Gainax, 1994). An adventure-Puzzle game (and could I also say survival horror?) I really enjoyed it, although the controls were the hardest part. The vibes, the art, the feeling of loneliness, and the puzzles were all great.

The journey begins! You might think of this alternate history a bit like an inverted castle to @jparish.bsky.social's Metroidvania Works.

Ce soir, j’ai craqué.

Fort.

It’s almost like green energy is the only way forward and a handful of oil barons are doing everything in their power to keep that from happening so they can get even richer at the cost of literally everything else in the world.

In no particular order, here are some games you could give the "Arcade Puzzle" tag to on Steam

Let's start a campaign to add the tag "Arcade Puzzle" to games like Tetris, Lumines, Puyo Puyo, Petal Crash, etc on Steam. These games get lumped in with great but completely different genres of puzzle games like Portal and sadly sidelined. Steam users have the power to carve out this niche!

I think the main reason I challenge a lot of the mythos regarding the Sega of America/Japan 1990s relationship stuff that is thrown around is that a lot of it is English-speaking fans of the era putting 100% trust into those former SoA staffer interviews where every American had an axe to grind.

"Hey Pat, are these ACTUALLY considered retro gaming consoles?"

Yes. They are.

Xbox 360 released in 2005 over 20 years ago, with the PS3 and Wii not far behind in 2006.

Keep in mind, when the XBOX 360 released, 20 years before that was 1985.

The year the NES launched...

Okay, I will preface this with the GIGANTIC disclaimer that I promise I know how this looks, and I *swear* this is not personally motivated: If you have an old #LiveJournal account, and it has things you still care about in it, download it or import it to Dreamwidth SOON. Details:

Today's Sega history dive is about their logos over the decades. During their initial years, it's unknown if they had anything like a wordmark, as instead of putting out ads themselves they would usually appear on distributor lists instead. (thread)

Stupid OpenTTD video to end the year - it’s The Trouble With AI.
youtu.be/Q9alQ6gnKuE Patrons have had this for a while, I was undecided about actually releasing it because even if you’re doing something silly with an LLM you’re still using an LLM. Call this a demonstration of why not to trust them!

This video is so good, a true new standard.

As someone who's tired of "game history" as people parroting trivia on Nintendo in the US, it's so refreshing to see how a tired topic can still be interesting when it's properly researched & contextualized. And also reminds us why any of this matters :)
Merry Christmas! If you'd like to spend 45 minutes celebrating video game history with me, we're about to debut The Untold Story of the Nintendo Entertainment System. I worked on his ALL YEAR, and I genuinely think it will reshape how we all think about the system. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJvp...

Any genres, really. Whatever your games knowledge, there will probably be dozens of sub-genres you're not even aware of that are thriving in the indie space. If they are no "big names" it's a failure of the industry & discoverability, not the genre.
I am begging games writers in 2026 to stop talking about point and click like it's a dead/dormant genre currently being resurrected by whatever thing you've just noticed
