Here is a list of shmups that I think are great beginners or casual entry points in the genre, with easy difficulties or features like rewind. I'm still a bad shmup player myself.

All are available on Switch, most are also on PC and/or PS4/5.

You have to admit, it's pretty funny to run SNK fighters on an officially branded Capcom cabinet.

Je sais pas qui c'est, mais... Je sais pas si c'est le compte qui est pourri ou ma liste qui se met à mettre des faux positifs 😬

On that I agree very much. Looking back on weird 70s and 80s games, there is a LOT of untapped design potential. Let's try to reinvent Cosmic Guerilla, Space Launcher, Space Laser, Astro Invaders, Carnival, Mad Alien, Magical Spot, King & Balloon, The End, Spiders, Flash Boy, Frog & Spider,

This is a pretty incredible take: "I haven't played these games but I think they're the future". What about playing them first, then coming back?

Like danmakus, they are *one* of many possibilities of shmup design, and to be honest, I feel they have much less design space, but I'm not a designer.

Now let's analyze some of his remarks on more modern games.

This part is spoken like someone who never ever played danmakus and just looked at them. Modern Danmakus are actually much easier to get into than most shooters from the 80s: they're impressive to look at, but very forgiving.

Fire Power (Allied Leisure, 1975)

A game where you control a tank… and that's all that's clear from the description. There are mentions of minefields and aircrafts but if you can find how it plays based on that, kudos.

Combat (Bertolino, 1975)

All I can say from the only picture I found is that there's a gun at the bottom, and planes at the top. How does it play? Your guess is as good as mine.

I mean, it's not bad, and I don't dislike it, it's just... I'd rather play SDOJ.

The design is also a bit too generic, honestly. It's just spaceships, and there's sometimes a picture of a girl. Lots of browns and greys, not helped by the UI around the game.

I'm loving DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou so much that I wanted to try DaiOuJou again.

And... well, it still doesn't really click. The novice mode is a bit too easy, and the normal mode is too difficult and too technical.

I am less regular on the third stage, which has a lot more stuff going on. I can't imagine how it is in normal mode. But I can at least reach the fourth stage most of the time. I still can't get to the boss, though.

I'm getting better little by little. I can now finish the second stage without using bombs or losing lives in a very regular manner (still novice mode).

There's even a third episode, made for Game Gear by M2 in 2020, with the luxury of having basically infinite space on the cart (the ROM is 1MB, which was very expensive back then) and a much deeper knowledge of what the series is about.
