Very interesting that they are so tall compared to other life around it. Some got to 25 feet tall (7.6 meters)!
Prototaxites is a taxon close to my heart, as it was the first organism we reconstructed in VFX for my first major TV project, Earth, back in 2022. So cool to learn it may have sat on an entirely unknown branch of life!

One reason was the weather (predicting it). It helps to predict the weather in Europe if you know what it's like in Greenland. Several clandestine German weather stations operated in Greenland at various stages of the war.
There was even a plan to refuel bombers there on their way to attack NYC.
