New WP (by me and others) on how disclosure mandates:

(1) increase disclosure (primarily of negative outcomes), and (2) how expectations of increased disclosure by others slows down innovation.

Link and more details in @florianederer.bsky.social's thread...
Transparency helps innovation ... until it doesn't.

My new paper with Cunningham, Hodgson, and Wang (on the JM!) studies the 2017 FDA Final Rule, which required drug firms to publicly disclose all clinical trial results.

Disclosure increased, but innovation slowed.

🤫Trade secrets are a widely used but understudied form of intellectual property. Our forthcoming Management Science paper investigates trade secret use at the project level & provides evidence that firms respond to trade secret legal protection by increasing use of secrets. lnkd.in/dJVScxJxhttp...

🤐 While often impossible to study, we know firms protect their (often, most important) IP using trade secrets.

@aldona.bsky.social and I found a way to observe and study them. We find trade secret use & novelty increases following increased legal protection.

- costumes!
- over the top discrimination!
- over the top speeches!
- skipping over all the parts between Discrimination and Becoming Important!
- semi-famous canadian (Victor Garber) is the star!
