This, but with society as the unit of analysis is basically my whole thing right now. Get out your vision boards for parallel institution building. Nope. Don’t tell me what can’t be done. Tell me how we figure out how to do it.
For you (and for me!)

parliamentary systems, and governments that can get dissolved at the moment they lose popular support, are a way to improve this "lie then smash-and-grab" style of governance.

TAPPER: Do you agree that the US is at risk of a recession?

BESSENT: I believe we are in a transition period here. I think we're in good shape, but there are sectors of the economy that are in recession

I now get safety alerts from my kids’ school about ICE activity in the area that feel like active shooter emails except the threat is our own government. I’m appreciate those who are protecting the kids, even escorting them to bus stops or staying late with them at school until it’s safe to leave.

i don’t think people on bluesky understand the severity of this situation.

i woke up to literally hundreds of texts from friends and family thinking about either moving back home to india or applying to other countries for jobs. this includes me.
Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

Chrysler dealer at the corner of Peterson and Western in Chicago making sure customers know why their prices are up as much as 30%. Drastic times (parent company Stellantis posted a $2.5 billion loss in 1st half of 2025), drastic measures.

I found it personally helpful to take a moment to reflect and regroup in the fight for a just society, and I hope this conversation helps others as well.

Without an organized and significant in number engaged base, he will feel the gravitational pull of the ruling class. Electoral politics in the US is for too many, the election/voting & then going home. I worry about that in this instance.

Firing the BLS chief over bad job numbers is exhibit 5,378 proving Donald Trump hates working people. The jobs report shows workers are hurting and there’s likely more pain to come and what does he do? Fire the messenger. He just does not care.

In 1937, the Soviet Union conducted a census. Stalin didn't like the results (the numbers were lower than expected), so he purged the statistical agencies and ordered a new census to be conducted in 1939. Which produced numbers he liked better.

To me, today's jobs report is what entering a recession looks like. Could we pull up? Sure. But if we look back and end up dating an official recession that starts 3-6 months from now, this is what it would look like today - rapid softening/deterioration in the labor market.

If you want to know how a country gets to the point where people from a targeted minority are forced to wear some sort of visual signifier of their identity on their clothing, it really seems like this is the progression.
One of the plaintiffs is a U.S. citizen working at a car wash that has been raided by Border Patrol multiple times. He gave them his ID but they demanded a passport.

Because he didn’t have one, they detained him and drove him to a different location to check his status.

Every American should read this ACLU lawsuit about what is happening in Los Angeles and California. It is the stuff of dystopian nightmares. This is not immigration enforcement. It is positively stuffed with videos and articles documenting racial profiling on a scale unseen since Jim Crow.
