I am almost done with Ulysses so I decided it was the perfect time to start the Power Broker.

(I have about 129 pages of Ulysses left and I am going to finish it before the end of the year because I can’t start another year without having finished this book I swear to god)

my (relatively) low effort Christmas Eve meal was scalloped potatoes, a Caesar salad, a NY strip steak and some charred string beans. I also made cinnamon rolls for dessert.

Lots of lessons I think but everything turned out delicious.

tried to go to that one Whole Foods in Gowanus for some potatoes and was reminded that the worst people on earth inhabit that Whole Foods.

finally put up and decorated our Christmas tree. All of the ribbons were handmade by my little sibling. Also features Polaroids from the last few years. The only real ornament is an ornament of our orange cat. 🐈

me, in the first coherent moment I’ve had in a week: I should go to law school and study contracts.

(I am reading a residential contract for sale lol)

NYSNA New York City private sector nurses announced that they voted overwhelming – 97% – to authorize a strike!

Nurses don't want to strike but are willing to do whatever it takes to win fair contracts.

A new poll released today by me found:

• 9 in 10 voters canvassed last Sunday in Forest Hills support universal child care

• 7 of 9 supporters support taxing the rich and signed a letter to their NYS reps on the spot in 25-degree weather

You too can conduct your own poll: act.ourtime.nyc/sign-up
"A new poll released by Siena University on Tuesday found that nearly two in three voters across the state favor the new benefit and would support Mr. Mamdani’s plan to pay for it by increasing taxes on those earning more than $1 million a year."

have had a few hard weeks and most of everything feels complicated but I just spent six hours cooking for someone I love & feeling close to someone is an antidote for so much.

(I made Korean braised short ribs with potatoes and carrots + a spinach salad with tons of fall elements)

this was a really powerful approach to questioning noem—bringing the actual people impacted by her reign of terror. from her perch it's easy to see these cases as abstractions but she needs to be confronted with them at every turn.
MAGAZINER: How many veterans have you deported?

NOEM: We haven't deported veterans

MAGAZINER: We are now joined on Zoom by a combat veteran you deported to Korea
