"As a core member of Booker T. & the MG’s, the 'Memphis Group' that backed up the soulful voices of the Stax-Volt Records roster throughout the 1960s, Cropper was a quintessential, self-effacing team player."

Steve Cropper: 9 Essential Songs
An architect of Memphis soul, Cropper made his guitar sing and sting. And as a songwriter, he collaborated on more than a few indelible anthems.

Used to live a few blocks away on Rue Chomedy and get standing room tickets for like, five bucks I think. Always ended up with a seat...
On this day in 1924, the Montreal Forum opened. The Montreal Canadiens played their final game there on March 11, 1996 and it is now a National Historic Site.

I remember plonking a string on one of his metal guitar sculptures (in MOMA i think) and getting heavily eye-balled by the staff.
Happy birthday Pablo Picasso, born on this day in 1881. When you see the prices his work fetches these days it’s enough to make your eyes pop out of one side of your head.

OTD 1954 Elvis Presley makes his one and only appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, where he sings "Blue Moon Of Kentucky." His Rockabilly version doesn't go over well with the crowd. Elvis remembered the Opry manager advising him to “go back to Memphis and drive a truck.”

I remember the night of Aug 9 when Jerry Garcia died. Was in Woodstock NY and there was a big moon in the sky over Tinker Street. Sat by the bridge with my guitar and tried to absorb as much released spirit as I could.
It's still all around us even now...
