Common grackles appear black from a distance, but have glossy purple heads and bronzy-iridescent bodies. Females are less glossy than males and have shorter tails. This guy is showing his yellow stink eye, he's standing on a boulder in Colonel Samuel Smith Park, Etobicoke Ontario.

My student Griffin just sent me this profoundly sad photo of a Great Bowerbird bower. The painting on the right depicts what the bower should look like, filled with pebbles, shells, and bones. Nowadays, the birds use what they can most easily find in their surroundings: garbage.

The Gulf Fritillaries in my garden today. I've never seen one with yellow shoulders before, so I included it even though the picture's not great. #insectthursday #butterflies 🌱🦋
A Gulf Fritillary butterfly on an orange cosmos flower with wings outspread. It has wide orange wings with black circles along the bottom wings and iridescent veining, black spots and three tiny white translucent spots on each shoulder. A somewhat blurry picture of another Gulf Fritillary, this one has two smudges of bright yellow on each shoulder under the white dots. A third Gulf fritillary butterfly with wings outspread. This one has fewer and smaller black dots than the one in first picture.
