George Monbiot nails it again. Trump referring to my country the 51st state is not a joke to me.
Obscene ideas are injected into public life with "humour" ... and then enacted. My column this week is pegged to the recent calls in the Spectator to murder people at Glastonbury, and on GB News to starve and shoot disabled people.
You could call it wink murder.

Given my background in anxiety research and treatment I have been asked by media of late to speak about how to manage the stress of these current times. I wrote an Opinion piece for The Toronto Star which appeared today:

Canadians!

I have an assignment for you this weekend.

What is THE MOST CANADIAN thing you own?

It can be anything. A book, a garment, a food item, a tool, a decorative object, a cd, anything.

"The first step...is clear: stop collecting student teaching evaluations. To knowingly use measures that do not meet the construct validity standards in research, while sacrificing social justice objectives and undermining educational goals in the classroom, is simply unjustifiable."
this is nothing new to me, but i actually recently had my own control group comparison for once! co-taught with a male colleague. same content, same opinions, etc. guess which one of us got the derogatory comments about their personality and warmth! 🙃
It is time to abandon student evaluations of teaching

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.
“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on

Sigh. ChatGPT cover letters are not well-written, informative, or impressive - but are easily identifiable bc if you run our ad through ChatGPT it spits out the same puerile template, wording, and phrasing for you as it does for all the other applicants who do same.

#OnlyBeautifulThings was a big success and helped a lot of folks yesterday. The great thing about hashtag events is you can scroll through them anytime. Like today if you need to.

You might also enjoy scrolling #ArtAdventCalendar for literally thousands of pieces of art posted in December.
It's time to turn off your TV, mute all the keywords and post #OnlyBeautifulThings (with alt text of course)
