This is one the most authentic, frustrating, and alarming inside looks at what pressure, cuts and "forced" retirement have done to a critical National Weather Service forecast office. Worth a read to illustrate what many of us have been saying

Tired in Tornado Alley
A crucial National Weather Service office, battered by cuts, is trying to put on a brave face as tornado season peaks.

Psst…everybody with radar data in their cell phone is getting that radar data from NOAA/NWS.

Take away the technicians, you take away the radars, you take away the ability of NWS to issue warnings to keep people safe.

Lack of staff is leading to the loss of even more balloon observations. I look at hundreds of these data points daily for my job. Both observed & model derived. These balloon observations can be critical in accurate severe thunderstorm forecasts & watch issuance. They improve model accuracy as well.

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country.

This Friday, where will you be?

Excellent article explaining the vast ways the National Weather Service protects life and property, and supports commerce in the U.S. The NWS is the gold standard across the world, with many countries modeling the NWS operating model. It’s a government service worth saving.
Here's a small list of the ways you directly benefit from the National Weather Service on a daily basis.

The agency is a public good that issues critical, lifesaving forecasts and alerts. We must save it from indiscriminate and irreparable damage.

Do you live in the Southeast U.S.? Did you receive a tornado or severe t-storm warning from the NWS yesterday? Did you feel good knowing someone is watching out for you & letting you know potentially dangerous weather was headed your way? If so, maybe let others know why you think NWS is important.

Bomb Cyclone Fujiwhara 🌀🌀

Yes, those are real words. Another area of low pressure is rapidly deepening off the Pacific coast, this time spinning around the first “bomb cyclone” to the north to eventually become the stronger system of the two.
