I missed this yesterday in the holiday hubbub. It's great writing on a great band, one whose catalog is worth dipping into at any point in their chronology, and one whose absence truly makes the heart grow fonder. Never stop being you, Bradford Cox (and please come back).
Happy Boxing Day! I wrote about why Deerhunter were the greatest indie rock band of their generation (despite Bradford Cox hating “indie rock”), why I barely covered them in my book about indie’s mainstream glow-up, and how badly I want them to come back:

This holiday ep is a bit different as I nerd out over indie rock with author and Stereogum editor @chrisdeville.bsky.social, where we talk about how finding indie music opened up new worlds and helped us build our teenage identities!

This is damn excellent. I absolutely loved Fading Frontier and Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared and felt like Deerhunter was entering their most interesting phase and then....silence. Please come back!

I feel like we’re one “Helicopter” needle drop on Heated Rivalry away from a major Deerhunter revival; until then, read @chrisdeville.bsky.social’s excellent retrospective on the band’s halcyon days: open.substack.com/pub/suchgrea...

I've long wondered why Deerhunter never really made the jump to revered legacy band status. Chris' excellent essay here makes the undoubtedly correct point that this was feature-not-bug stuff in the band's pointed lack of self-mythologizing or interest in becoming part of the larger pop firmament.

All I'm saying is the Michigan haters have been right all along. This entire program is rotten to the core. Harbaugh established this culture and then peaced out when he was about to get busted. Dude is a menace.

people who are new to academia tend to find its obsession with sources and citations a brake on their "i'm just trying to be CREATIVE, man" mindset. but it turns out the relentless obsession with accuracy, citation, and *provenance* is a load-bearing pillar of the whole enterprise

There's a non-zero chance some Columbus Crew fans who checked out at the end of the season will never know Wilfried Nancy left for Celtic if he gets fired and the Crew hire him back. The whole thing will sound like a wild conspiracy theory.
