A fave of mine is jail support, offering snacks / phone calls / rides / etc to ppl post-release. I like that it’s tangible, lets you sit, & can be as social (or not) as you’d like. Connecting with @chicommunityjs.bsky.social is a great way to get started.

@chicommunityjs.bsky.social does the work of providing assistance to those who are released from Cook County jail.
They were among the first to report and document this shameful practice on the part of Cook County Jail.
new:

for the @chicagoreader.com’s night issue, @djbyrnes1.bsky.social wrote about the trend of people getting released from the cook county jail increasingly late at night.

between may 2020 and july 2025, more than twice as many people were released between 8 pm-5 am than between 5 am-8 pm.

Summer is in full swing, and with the recent and upcoming heat waves, we’re asking for some funds to replenish supplies at the tent!

💧 We’re raising $ to restock snacks, drinks, personal hygiene supplies and more for people coming out.

@nlgchicago.bsky.social have posted about Chicago arrests from the protest last night, and @chicommunityjs.bsky.social supports everyone released from our county jail with snacks, jackets when it's cold, bus cards, and even rides to the precinct where their stuff is and home.

Forever grateful for everyone who devotes time to @chicommunityjs.bsky.social, whether on-the-ground outside Cook County Jail, scheduling, fundraising, comms, or lots of other logistical tasks. Supporting criminalized people without expanding the PIC is part of how we build an abolitionist future.

If you’re in Chicago, a great way to learn more directly about the experience of incarceration - and help people who’ve just experienced it! - is to volunteer for a @chicommunityjs.bsky.social jail support shift! bsky.app/profile/that...
Even colder tonight but we had fire, blankets, & camaraderie. And the colder it is the more essential it is to be out there giving coats, rides, snacks, phone calls, and a place by the fire to people just released from jail.

The temps are awful this wk but @chicommunityjs.bsky.social is out there 630-11p every night.

Over the yrs, there has also been a pattern of CCJ waiting for jail support to pack up & leave before releasing ppl.

Supporting jailed comrades is a big part of direct action. @chicommunityjs.bsky.social asks us to do the same for those who are criminalized, targeted, & surveilled in their daily lives, for those we don't know, no questions asked. And in an era of dehumanization and erasure, we need more of that.

Some people who volunteer are already part of local abolitionist organizing. Others are learning about the harms and violence of jails and prisons during their shifts. No prior experience or poli ed is required, something that is incredibly useful for building mutual aid engagement.

A project I didn't include in that newsletter post (wanted to write about things not Chicago-specific) but that I support is @chicommunityjs.bsky.social. Volunteers are on the ground every night providing snacks, drinks, phone calls, rides, cigs, warm clothes to those released from Cook County Jail.

Chicago Community Jail Support are on Bluesky! @chicommunityjs.bsky.social

They try to do 1-2 shifts outside the jail every day, and welcome volunteers. There’s very little barrier to getting involved in this work.
