Check out some cool work I did with @kenzco4.bsky.social thanks to the Pathfinder Fellowship!
This month, we’re excited to feature @cheristyjones.bsky.social, a CUAHSI Pathfinder Fellowship recipient, who shares her experience and research journey. Through the Fellowship, Cheristy explored the critical interface of climate science and Indigenous governance.

Hi! Do you want to rip your face off over the constant attacks on science in the US? Here are some actions you can take! They require varying amounts of time, repetitiveness, and sticking your neck out, so hopefully you can find something in here that’s right for you:

Reiterating my call to fellow federally-funded scientists: Call your reps, tell them how this hurts science and everything good that comes from science

(Also non-scientists, and scientists without federal funding! But the more of us who can directly speak to the impacts of these freezes the better)
The National Science Foundation cancelled over 60 grant review panels today, effectively grinding funding of new projects to a halt.

The so-far indefinite pause comes as NSF grapples with the impact Trump's executive orders will have on their grantmaking process.

National Science Foundation freezes grant review in response to Trump executive orders
The National Science Foundation has cancelled all grant review panels this week. It's unclear how long the pause could last.

I just called my senators + rep with a modified version of this script. Even living abroad, if you are a US citizen you're required to pay taxes. These disruptions mean your money isn't funding cures + climate adaptation. You don't have to be a scientist/researcher to call to say you're concerned.

To reiterate another way: grants pay for people’s jobs. This has a direct link to our economy.
I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

For people who may not be familiar with the NSF grant lifecycle, here's my experience in Astronomy (1 call per year, ~15% success rate):

* Applications due: November
* Panels held: February-May
* Initial rejections: March-June
* Funding notification: July/August
* Money available: September

I’m an NSF panel reviewer that was scheduled to meet today. Just got notice that all NSF panels were canceled today. I reviewed some innovative proposals in support of students. Devastating if these scholars don’t get to do this work. For the love of science & students I hope this is just a delay.💔

Faculty mentoring in academic institutions, a thread.
As I advance in my academic career (read: as I keep getting more gray hair), I've come to appreciate, even more than before, the profound responsibility we (senior-ish faculty) have to support and nurture emerging talent, not diminish it.
