🚨New Paper 🚨
The PeatPic Project: Predicting plot-scale green leaf #phenology across #peatlands

So happy to see this paper online — one of my favourite projects!

We explored how to capture how peatlands change colour using smartphones and community science!

Current and future methane emissions from boreal-Arctic wetlands and lakes - Nature Climate Change
How much methane will be emitted from the boreal-Arctic region under climate change is not well constrained. Here the authors show that accounting for distinct wetland and lake classes leads to lower ...

If they are really cancelling NSF REUs, then we need to change graduate admissions to exclude or minimize the importance of past research experience. There's just no way to compete unless you are well connected or monied otherwise.

Absolutely fucked up beyond all recognition.

NSF has an insanely low administrative overhead. Laying off staff saves nothing and the cost to our leadership in scientific advancement (with massive public and business implications) will be long-lived and dire.
NSF plans to lay off a quarter and a half of its staff in the next two months. www.eenews.net/articles/sci...

This reckless move will shatter U.S. scientific leadership and cripple innovation for generations.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

I'm very sad that "I have a paper on this" continues

Funding delays of > 30 days lead to, after 5 years:

- 40% increase in scientists exiting US labor force (constrained among those born in the US)
- 20% decrease in wages
- Burden is born by postdocs, grad students, and staff
It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

Really appreciate Jonathan Lambert pointing out that NSF grants are congressionally mandated to weigh how grants broaden participation in science, putting the administration's executive order against DEIA in conflict with, and potentially undermining, congressional legislation

I mean, literally, the answer to this is "I am federally prohibited from telling you anything about my students without a subpoena or judicial warrant; if you have a subpoena or judicial warrant, please submit it to [Legal Officer/Office] to ensure it is in compliance with all relevant federal laws"
If you have students who are trans no you don’t. If you have students of color who may be affected by ICE no you don’t. If anyone asks you gender or racial the makeup of your class you don’t have to tell them.

Protect your class and protect your students by not complying in advance. They trust you.
1. Breaking News: Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting trans youth and teachers in schools who teach for them.

It goes after "social transition" and threatens arrests.

I will go through line by line, as I have the last 3 nights.
