Congratulations to my Honours student, Leon Sims, who graduated this week! Leon achieved First Class Honours for his thesis investigating how microclimatic variation in Australian Alps influences flowering and plant-pollinator networks. An outstanding achievement. Very proud supervisor here! 🐝🌸🪰🌼🦋

Yep, the error bars have tightened now that we are ~14 hours out from tomorrow's Midday.

If the 39C temp holds out, it will def. break the record for any day in October since records began.

Parts of Australia will experience the hottest place on the planet tomorrow incl. our city (6M people)

Beautiful photos showing the microscopic details of #seeds at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Actual seeds mounted in acrylic next to the photos is a particularly nice touch.

Exhibit is on in #Canberra until 16 Nov. Free.

An important paper - just out in @natureportfolio.nature.com documenting a decline in net C uptake by Australian rainforests. Eventually the same will occur in other rainforests - a reminder that we need to get to net zero ASAP. @biologyanu.bsky.social

Aboveground biomass in Australian tropical forests now a net carbon source - Nature
A transition from carbon sink to source for the aboveground woody biomass of moist tropical Australian forests has occurred, driven by increasingly extreme climate anomalies.

Occasionally I take the time to clear out my #ToReadPile, mostly manuscripts I linked to from Blue Sky languishing in a large stack of open tabs. Here are highlights from the most recent clean out (out of ~80).

Ponderosa pine smells like butterscotch.

Go ahead, sniff one the next time you're in the western US. Some say "vanilla", some say "oh no, my nose is covered in sap."

Let's talk about birds, butterscotch, forest fires, blue wood, & boring beetles.

But mostly this thread is about terpenes.
