I wrote a book about ancient Christian martyrdom and this is really sticking with me

the stories of martyrs emphasized their righteousness and self-control in the face of state authorities who lacked both

early Christians sought to train themselves to replicate that way of being from the stories

Plato argued in the Republic that the 'tyrant,' or someone with unlimited wealth and power, would live the worst possible life because his soul would be devoured by lawless, unlimited desires that could never be sated. I think we've gotten confirmation of this from more cases than Trump lately
I always thought Plato was pretty pollyannaish on this point, but this is decent evidence for the view that a man of bad character will therefore be unhappy even with every external trapping of success and good fortune.
President Donald Trump gifted the world with nearly 200 Truth Social posts (and counting) on Christmas Day, where he amplified conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and called for a member of Congress to be deported.

GOP operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, convicted election fraudsters, were paid $960,000 in the second quarter to secure a pardon for a former nursing-home operator who defrauded the government of $38 million. Trump pardoned the man, Joseph Schwartz, last month.

yeah there are a set of diseases which are potentially deadly for infants before they are scheduled for vaccination, which we had more or less eliminated via vaccine herd immunity, and they're coming back

I don't read these articles because just seeing the headlines fucks me up. It's just so awful.
Subtext: This entire family *is* vaccinated, and the mom got a booster while pregnant. Their child was just 2 weeks old when she contracted whooping cough -- too young to be vaccinated.

But experts say if vax rates drop, this kind of infection becomes more common -- bc the disease is just around.
Vaccination rates are plummeting across the country, as part of a larger, troubling trend of growing vaccine hesitancy that is fueling a resurgence of preventable diseases, an NBC News and Stanford University investigation found.

Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

1. Culture (do players like playing for you? Do they buy in?)
2. Tactical clarity (a mediocre gameplan executed w/ conviction will kick the shit out of a perfect gameplan executed w/ confusion)
3. Player development (there are no finished products in MLS; go to coach improvement)
What makes a good MLS coach? There are a couple of unicorns, but otherwise I can’t figure it what I should want for my team.

Interesting to note that the coal industry in the U.S. employs just a tad over 40,000 people, according to the BLS. The same source tells us that 64,000 people work at wineries.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

I keep thinking about how the COVID vaccine was rolled out for free for all Americans in 2021 by the federal & state governments with support from local health departments & universities. Since, we have seen the privatization of delivery thru commercial pharmacies & the need for insurance coverage.
NEWS: CVS, the largest pharmacy chain in the country, is currently not offering Covid vaccines in 16 states and DC — even to people who meet the new FDA criteria — because the CDC hasn't signed off and isn't expected to do so (if it does so) for at least three weeks.
