Husband. Father. Homemaker. North Carolinian. Parisian.

Given the new influx of folks here, I thought it might make sense to drop an introduction!

I'm a husband and father of two amazing kids currently living with my family in Paris, France. I'm a lawyer by training who spent seven years as a local elected official in Durham, North Carolina. 1/2

Of course. This may in fact happen by midnight. The thing is that Mamdani will be able to say 'well that's not what he said when I met with him' and keep it moving.
Thing is, when Mamdani does something early next year that challenges some Trump admin nonsense, you *know* that Trump is going be extra angry and suggest it's a backstabbing, noting how "nice" he was to him in the Oval Office as if that means Mamdani should now agree to all of Trump's demands.

Mamdani getting Trump to back down & even *compliment* him costs Mamdani absolutely nothing (& indeed actually shows his skills) & probably also saves a lot of vulnerable ppl in this city a trememndous amount of pain if it means Trump is less inclined to act shitty towards us bc of this meeting
Folks fun police line is forming

And it has indeed come to pass.
Trump in a room with a very charismatic person results in like half a day of Trump agreeing with everything that person said, so this has the potential to be very, very funny.

The plain truth is that this isn’t just an emotional demand, it’s absolutely necessary to impart lessons that resound throughout history. You know where fascism crashes hard? France, due to their celebration of the time when the oligarchs got their heads chopped off indiscriminately.

I'm saddened to learn of the death of Justice Willis P. Whichard -- the only person to have served in both the NC House and Senate and on both of our appellate courts, the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of North Carolina.

He was also my friend. Godspeed.

A couple of years ago, was teaching kiddo about budgets and food and letting her pick the veg at the farmers market and she pulled aside money for the poetry fox because we needed poetry for the family too.

Counterpoint: Chris is one of the people that makes Durham the special place it is and there are lots of different kinds of poetry and it’s great to celebrate them all even the ones made by a guy in a fox suit with a typewriter.

Sen Kelly and and Rep Giffords are patriots who have not only served our country they have suffered for our country. What are we doing here?
Kelly: "I never expected after serving 25 years in the Navy flying combat missions over Iraq and Kuwait, flying the Space Shuttle, that now I've got to worry about my personal safety and that of my wife, Gabby Giffords, who was already nearly assassinated, because of something the president said."

Wow.
Dang - how bad was the Border Patrol invasion in North Carolina?

None other than Thom Tillis himself is blasting DHS for gross overreach, and demanding lists of those detained, property damage caused by CBP agents, and their plan for restitution.

Hard to know what this is really about, who knew what and when, and whether some White House staffer is running to the printer to pick up freshly drafted pardons for Bill Pulte an Ed Martin and heading to the Oval as we speak.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Satisfying thread explaining in minute legal detail why this whole thing is utter nonsense.

tl;dr: It’s illegal for soldiers to follow unlawful orders, and it’s not a crime to say so.
Let’s talk about sedition and treason, because the most powerful yet inadequate man in the world is having a tantrum about it, and his soulless, spineless sycophants are boosting his message.

This is an argument only made by people who've never been to DC, have only been to DC on tourist trips, or are cynically appealing to people who don't know DC is substantially larger than just the monumental core, which DC statehood plans always carve out to remain a federal district.

I believe this question has been answered in the Fourth Circuit, and the answer is ‘no, a defective original indictment cannot serve as a basis for tolling of the statute of limitations or the §§ 3288, 3289 savings clauses’

The federal government is inflicting pain and fear on our city but Durham is standing up for our neighbors and three utterly badass elected officials are doing what they do best — leading.

Proud of my friends Commissioner Nida Allam, Council Member Javiera Caballero and Senator Sophia Chitlik. 💪🏻❤️✊🏻

The facts are complicated, but here’s a summary of what appears to have happened based on the filings and today’s hearing:
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

NO MEANINGFUL SUBSIDIES FOR FOSSIL FUELS *laughs maniacally, sobs, collapses*
KERNEN: Does the admin want to dismantle wind projects that are getting started?

WRIGHT: The track record is bad. We've spent hundreds of billions of subsidies for an energy source that's sometimes there. The main goal is to stop subsidizing. There are no meaningful subsidies for fossil fuels

In a just world, this revelation would be the end of Chuck Schumer’s time as Minority Leader.

Just infuriating.
Schumer acknowledged to reporters he was involved in negotiations with Thune on the CR, and specifically the provision entitling senators to millions in compensation. 1/
