In its rush to support Israel the West eviscerated, then incinerated its own moral standing in the world. We are less secure today than we were a year ago.

Two years ago, we demonstrated that the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic likely began at the Huanan Market via zoonosis resulting from the wildlife trade.

Many unanswered questions remained about the animals themselves.

Some answers, out today in @CellCellPress.

So, genAI generates nonsense slop, it's released into the wider ecosystem of knowledge and information, which genAI feeds on to generate more slop which further pollutes the ecosystem, ad infinitum?

Cool cool.
genAI is a threat to knowledge and information systems and is eroding public trust in technology at a fast pace and will eventually shred social fabrics that hold us together

I actually do think that a Jewish-led philosophy of self-determination is important to our continued safety and I’m not saying I have all the answers but I am saying that what self-determination can and should look like in 2024 is something we desperately need to confront and reevaluate.

These people are so bizarre to me. Nichols ostensibly agrees that Trump is a threat to science and democracy, but then he dedicates an entire column to discrediting an institution standing up for these values. Is everyone supposed to just think that Trump is bad but not say anything?

Nichols pretends that his argument is about *how* the magazine endorsed Harris, that it endorsed her moral and political positions rather than her scientific ones.

This is ludicrous on its face since every political issue is also empirical, but the endorsement did link its arguments to science.

one thing that comes to mind reading this is that the right is fully post-truth, post-reality, post-empirical grounding. conservatives don’t seem to think that anything is real and that nothing they say matters or should weigh in any judgment of their character. it’s all trolling, all the time
