Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

Given the way white conservative lawlessness forms a *defining feature* of what has been called democracy in the U.S., something we desperately need coming out of this current crisis is a body of history more directly critical of the state in the U.S., esp pre-1960s.

It will not go to the 5th Circuit. By law it goes straight to SCOTUS. Ron DeSantis is a moron.

he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

He will continue teaching.

I literally just had my yearly check-in and recertification in October. I am disabled, can't work, and am on SSI. I can't afford my medically mandated diet without SNAP, and reapplying is a lot of work, which is made harder by my disability and poor health. This is maddening.

What if instead of Cyber Monday (aka Daddy Bezos Day), we did a Support Indie Media Monday?

What are your favorite indie publications? Who are some of your favorite freelance and indie reporters and commentators?

Can we make this a thing?

On Dec. 8, 2015, Jeffrey Epstein offers a NY Times reporter photos of Donald Trump and "girls in bikinis in my kitchen." Epstein tells the reporter that he "gave" Trump his "20 year old girlfriend...after two years."

When people looked into these type of rumors the Times smugly criticized them.

Important to understand the Epstein stuff and the fascism and the corruption are, in a lot of ways, really all the same story from different angles: powerful men who can and do abuse vulnerable people around them because they can, and because systems of elite accountability catastrophically failed

So much this. Until Sunday, it felt like Dems were finally stepping up to meet the moment which is why Sunday felt so awful when they stopped.

Great job, @schumer.senate.gov. You've changed the story from "GOP hurting millions of Americans to please unpopular, failing, delusional despot who's destroying his party" to "Dems are too weak and divided in the face of Trump's strength to take a stand and protect Americans"

I think I would take a world in which there are no minoritarian veto points on policymaking—including no judicial veto, an extremely painful prospect right now. But a world in which Biden didn’t have all his policies blocked by the courts is probably a world in which Trump doesn’t get a second term.
I really wonder how American politics would change if parties could pass their priorities with a simple majority, one at a time.

Not sure Reagan, who vetoed sanctions against Apartheid South Africa (only to have Congress override the veto), is the guy I'd pick for this example
This doesn’t just gut refugee admissions — it creates a race-based system that prioritizes white South Africans over people facing real danger in their home countries.

An insult to everything we stand for. Trump is burying Ronald Reagan’s vision of America as a “shining city on a hill.”
Trump administration slashes number of refugees, prioritizes Afrikaners
The State Department will also no longer manage the resettlement of refugees.

We are losing something by having newsrooms where everyone who has more than a few years’ experience has gotten fired. I don’t fault a young writer for not knowing about things that happened before she was born. But now there are no editors to help give context to these stories, either.
