Here's how I foresee the Northern California risk level for the next week:
Thursday-Saturday: Minor impact
Sunday-Tuesday: Moderate impact

Key Messages from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center Issued December 9, 2025 and Updated December 17, 2025 Atmospheric Rivers Bringing Major Holiday Travel Hazards Across the West A mid-level ridge over the Bering Sea and a downstream trough in the northeastern Pacific favors continued atmospheric river (AR) events across western CONUS. The greatest AR potential is expected initially over the lower half of the West Coast shifting to the Pacific Northwest by Dec 26. Possible impacts during the busy holiday travel period include flooding, landslides, and challenging travel conditions across mountain passes. Recently burned areas may face an elevated risk of flash flooding and debris flows. Power outages are possible in some areas due to high winds and heavy precipitation. (a) There is a high risk (greater than 60% chance) of heavy precipitation for coastal parts of central and southern CA Dec 25, shifting northward to western WA Dec 27-28. Possible flooding is highlighted for coastal parts of the West Coast excluding San Diego and the surrounding vicinity. (b) High risk of heavy snow is predicted for parts of the Sierra Nevada Dec 25 and the Cascades in WA Dec 27-28. Moderate risk (40-60% chance) extends to Dec 26 for the Sierra Nevada shifting north to the Klamath Mountains and Cascades Dec 26-31. Moderate risk of heavy snow is forecast for the Northern Rockies Dec 27-31. (b) Moderate risks of high winds are designated for the Rockies westward, with the likelihood decreasing across the southern portion by mid week-2. Information from NWS Seattle: In coordination with King County, we have issued a FLASH FLOOD WARNING for a levee breach in Tukwila WA near Todd, Blvd. Water is likely moving north towards I-405. In addition, an evacuation notice is now in effect from King County. This is for residents and businesses east of the green river in the Orillia area in Tukwila, Renton and Kent. Due to breach in the Desimone Levee, this area is under a GO NOW evacuation notice. Leave immediately if you are in this area. Conditions are dangerous and access routes may be lost at any time. Go north or south of evacuated area away from flooding waters. Do not drive or walk through standing or moving water. Turn around, don’t drown. Do not drive around barricades or road closures.

A high-amplitude flow pattern, characterized by near-record strength ridging and troughing (respectively) over the western and eastern U.S. and a very wavy jet stream, will bring a progression of notable weather to North America in the coming days.
