A conversation with a friend tonight reminded me of Octavia Butler’s wonderful “Parables” near-future series. Written in the 1990’s, it’s incredibly prescient. The verse below, from Parable of the Talents, ch. 11, p.191 struck me as particularly relevant. #Earthseed

As Heather Cox Richardson points out, creating Columbus Day to push back against the Second Klan during an era of anti-Italian violence & lynching (a subset of anti-Black Jim Crow violence) was good, just as challenging the way we remember how Columbus advanced Indigenous genocide is also good.
