Starting a thread of some favorite books published by small presses that just lost their NEA grants. Please chime in! I'll start with this incredible work of true crime / fiction that reminds me of Saidiya Hartman's work. coffeehousepress.org/collections/...

The Iowa legislature just became the first in modern history to repeal a statutory civil rights law by removing protections for gender identity first passed in 2007. They have legalized discrimination against trans people in housing, healthcare, and employment.

This is a campaign of eradication.

The reporting on the trans travel visa ban is criminal.

It does NOT only affect transgender athletes.

The cables CLEARLY say it affects all trans people. They can reject visas on point 6 of anyone who is requesting a visa that does not match their assigned sex at birth.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

“From the beginning, we see Cole as this split person: the heartbroken, tender child and the gritty adult trying to set moral boundaries in a tough environment. The magic Sickels weaves is in mirroring that same dichotomy with the land itself.” 🙏🏼

“Tender , raw, aching beauty.” Thank you. 🙏🏼
Finally read @cartersickels.bsky.social’s The Evening Hour in all its tender, raw, aching beauty. Read it yourself, and then watch the @appalshop.bsky.social film The Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man (Mimi Pickering, 1975) on YouTube.

Thank you! 🩷
It's very rare that I have to pace myself while reading. But @cartersickels.bsky.social The Prettiest Star is the exception. It's so real, visceral, sad that I can only read one chapter per night. Beautiful book.

Look, we tried to warn people. At this point, the only way out is through. Trump will precipitate a collapse and only then can we rebuild towards a better future. Our goal is to minimize the number of people we lose along the way. Build community, help others. Resilience is all we have.

It made me physically ill following updates from the Supreme Court today. Sending love to trans people, trans kids especially, and their families because… whew. Enduring this kind of hostility is an experience us cisgender will never fully understand.
